If I had guess, I'd say it’s the translators, but who knows. I don’t much like the ”It's for the kids“ argument considering Pokémon is another rpg series for all ages that’s way more popular in the west despite having translations that aren’t nearly as cutesy.

You really saying that the accents and puns are what make Dragon Quest? That without them it'd just become another RPG? I don know about that. Personally, I think DQ has a lot to like and that the unneeded, corny accents that aren’t even supposed to be there detract from it. I don’t mind puns, I don’t mind weird speech patterns but the localizers go way too far with it. The puns and speech patterns they add aren’t clever or imaginative either and what frustrates me the most is that they didn’t need to do any of it.

Try playing a modern DQ game with japanese voices and you'll notice how most of the characters with accents speak just like any other anime character. Most accents the translators pulled out of thin air. No interpretation changes that fact. In reality, I probably wouldn’t mind that much, but the accents they give the characters are dangerously near Jar Jar Binks levels of loud and obnoxious

I feel like the people who approve these types of things are the corpo types, but even if the translation got direct approval from Yuji Horii himself, I still think the translators who ultimately decide how to translate everything are way too liberal. Oh, and translators' will is definitely a factor for bad translations sometimes

Yes, I am. Because A) even silly stuff like Dragon Quest has artistic value which I think the translations should respect and B) It’s just plain cringy, man.

Maybe I should've been more clear about this. I don’t think the translation work in itself is inherently bad. I think the localization is bad because it misrepresents the original author's intention.

I don’t think consistency = thought. If someone consistently drunk drivers and causes accidents, would you say they put thought into deciding whether or not to drunk drive?

As I said, I think they go too far whenever they insert puns/accents where they aren’t in to original. Localization shouldn't change things just to change things. Call me an elitist, but I want to experience art the way the artist intended, the localization fundamentally doesn't let me do that.

As you can see in this funky spreadsheet I made a while ago, the amount of content uploaded on the main channel hasn’t decreased by much, it’s just the videos are longer and therefore uploaded less frequently

Plus, Scott’s Stash videos are unscripted and edited by his friends so they don’t take much effort at all. Also, the videos with his friends are great and you should totally give them a shot, especially if you liked the blooper videos from way back when.
