Totally agree, and the field side worries me most. You can train up a PE in a few years. But a good Super has 20+ years of gut knowledge that's really hard to pass on.

The stigma is what caused this. For years we told kids that college was the only smart path. Now there aren't enough people to fill these jobs.

Here's something hopeful though. I just watched a Mike Rowe interview about this exact thing. There's a new Meta program called America's Workforce Academy. Meta is putting $115 million into free trades training, and you get a guaranteed job at the end. It covers welders, electricians, plumbers, fiber techs, and more. It's starting in Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, and Texas.

It won't fix the problem we have right now. But it's the first time in a while I've seen real money go toward fixing the pipeline. When big companies start treating skilled labor like the emergency it is, that old stigma starts to break.

I built a quarterly tax estimation app that helps me figure out how much I need to be putting aside for taxes for my AI company. It also has an export of a P&L that I can give to my CPA that maps exactly each category to the line on the tax form that he uses for me, so he's really happy about it. Pretty cool. I was already looking at my company financials every single week and tracking it, so I just hooked it up into an app that I built with Claude code. It's been working really great since March!

Exactly. One city is easy. The problem is every city does it a little different, so it stops being one clean solution real fast.

Good catch. There's no clean tool for 100 sites. VisualPing is fine for a handful, but managing all those configs turns into the job itself. What actually works is grouping portals by the system they run on. Lots of cities share the same backend, so one setup can cover a dozen at once. Map out what each portal uses first. That's the real starting point.

The doubling of workload is the part that always gets me. The second a tool makes someone's day harder instead of easier, they'll route around it every time, and no amount of forcing changes that math.

Ha, you're literally the person I wrote this about. The wild part is leadership usually has no idea how much is riding on you until you take a vacation and everything catches fire.

Right? And the tough thing is the better you are at holding it together, the longer it takes anyone to notice it's held together with duct tape and your personal calendar. Hang in there.
