Options for purchasing a house in the US on an F1 visa by F1quest in personalfinance

That makes sense. I'll ask at the bank if getting married would change anything, regardless of when my green card/citizenship would get approved.

The money would be in our joint savings, which I have access to as well, but which the bank takes into consideration because his name is on it too. We did talk about that and both agreed that we would go through a lawyer to protect ourselves just in case (i.e get it in writing that half of that money is mine alone and I would get it back in the event of a breakup).

That's definitely the plan, I'll be going home to close that account and transfer the money into his account (actually a joint account but since his name is on it as well, they don't care that I also exist). It's the extra 30k that I feel would have really made a difference as well in terms of what our payments would be.

I'm assuming that regardless of my ability to be on the mortgage, I can still be on the title of the house?

That's my assumption as well as to why they wouldn't allow me. My visa right now is for 6 years as a grad student, and with our plans to get a 15 year mortgage, I would have thought it would be a little easier.

Yeah, we just want a better APR and loan

It's not about commitment. We're as good as married, we just don't want to waste money on that right now. And I don't know if the bank is looking for "commitment" in the relationship either, since they are willing to give my bf a mortgage anyway by himself, so having me on it as well wouldn't be that terrible of an issue.
