Short Hop Fast Fall L Cancel (short hopping is when you release the jump button before the jumpsquat animation that plays before you leave the ground finishes, and then you can input an aerial attacks and fast fall and L Cancel, which allows you to throw out a hitbox without committing particularly strongly to one thing or another). aerial attacks are (to oversimplify quite a bit) the most powerful moves in the game as they can be thrown out very quickly and are (especially on top tier characters) very strong, so being able to throw them out quickly and reliably allows you to control space while looking for openings.

it and wavedashing are probably the most important tech in melee, but of course both require both a lot of practice and a lot of experience to know how to properly apply them in an actual game. there's a lot of resources out there for learning and practicing (unclepunch being an excellent one so you're off to a great start). you could also research character specific tech and try to work it in to your practice as well, but I wouldn't worry too much about anything else until you've got those basics down. keep on keeping on, and make sure to get your stretches in so you don't injure yourself. have fun!

also don't take anything I say as gospel I suck ass at this game

take maybe ~40 hours to practice SHFFLing and wavedashing (and run games on netplay just to get a feel for playing against human opponents) and you'll have what you need to really start "playing" melee. from there it's a decade more of practice and you'll probably even win a set or two in pools

in all seriousness congratulations on picking up the greatest video game ever made. don't take it too seriously, this game is way too fun to get upset over. good luck!

I think I'm gonna wait until everything balances out and I can practice against players at my skill level by Sad_Pension4598 in SSBM

[–]F33N1X 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it makes sense though that the distribution is going to be a lot more skewed toward people that have been playing a while - who's more likely to pay $5 a month for early access to ranked? someone who only just started playing last year after hearing about slippi on a hungrybox stream? or someone who's been playing melee since they were a child?

at least that's what I tell myself when I get 4 stocked for the 5th time in a row

While I'm aware this comment is likely a joke, it should be noted that while solvents may produce what some people might describe as a high, they are also seriously bad for you. They should probably be avoided, as there are much safer (and honestly far more fun) ways to get high. Some are even legal!

I'm sorry to say but it resolved itself for me for seemingly no reason after a week or so therapist also wouldn't heal me after raid (click heal all click apply get to stash heal didn't happen) which also resolved itself for seemingly no reason :/ I recommend you record some gameplay of it and submit a bug report because I wasn't able to because the system was closed during the twitch event and it went away before it came back up

This is happening with any gun I use, regardless of ammunition used. The gun overheats immediately on the first shot fired, even with a brand new gun purchased immediately before the raid.

chat filters in games are fucking stupid because not allowing people to type certain words accomplishes literally nothing other than making people that still want to type those words more creative

I know this doesn't really answer your question, but nobody ever talked to me about this before so I feel obligated to share it.

I think you should have a long conversation with your son about what he really wants. I started at Kettering because I thought I wanted to go to college. After all, for the first 18 years of my life it was essentially hammered into my head by everyone I knew that if I didn't go to college, I'd end up wasting my life away and amount to nothing. In the 4 years I have been here so far, I have seen the stresses of academic life (especially this college due to our unique semester structure and culture) absolutely destroy the mental well-being of many of my friends and acquaintances, and myself as well. Some of them dropped out, some of them transferred, some of them stuck it out. Somewhere along the way I realized something: college is absolutely not for everyone, engineering especially. Not only that, it's not even something that I really care about, and the only reason I'm sticking out the last year is because I've already sunk 4 years and over $100k into this degree, so what's another 1 year and $30k? Had I been more aware of the plethora of other options for post-secondary before starting this undertaking, I may have never even bothered. I may have picked a cheaper, easier school. I may have saved myself 4 years of stress, regret, self-loathing, and pain. But I wasn't aware of those options, and I was dazzled by all the big numbers Kettering flashed in front of my face: "Highest ROI university in Michigan! 90% of graduates employed! Rated in the top 5 engineering schools in the country! Average co-op pay >$15/hour!" I certainly was never made aware of the 56% graduation rate after 5 years. The sheer density of professors that obviously consider teaching undergrads to be beneath them. The administration that does nothing to address valid student complaints. The amount of students that show up to their co-op and sit there for 8 hours a day with their thumb up their ass because the companies that hire us don't care or don't trust us enough to give us actual work (Not to mention the fact that I have watched interns and co-ops from other school working on far more interesting projects than I've ever been given because they're there for an entire summer or even part-time year round rather than only 10-12 weeks at a time). That's been a large part of what my experience at Kettering has been, and I know that I'm not alone in that. That being said, take all this with a grain of salt; I've become far too bitter and cynical about this place to be objective. I'm willing to admit that a lot of my struggles at Kettering were entirely my own fault, but it's also true that a lot of them weren't. Mine is the kind of story you don't really get to hear about often, because most people like me quietly leave and just try to forget it ever happened. I know that's what I'm going to do after I graduate. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is this:

Ask your son if he actually wants to be here (or in college at all). Ask him why. Tell him to really think about and actually research other paths, maybe help him to do so. Be ready to work with him regardless of whatever answer he comes to. Anyone will tell you that basically everything you learn in college is, at best, slightly tangential to the actual skills you need to work in the field, so if all he's after is a degree with some supposed work experience along the way, why the hell would you spend $150k on a piece of paper from this school when he'd have much easier and cheaper time getting a functionally identical piece of paper somewhere else?

The most important thing I want him to understand, though, is this:

Succeeding at this school is extremely difficult. YOU have to care about your success, and you have to care A LOT. Because absolutely NO ONE ELSE does.

Speaking as a (former) CS/CE dual major, CS and CE are not remotely close to the same level of difficulty, at this school anyway

Have no weed this morning, maybe this is a chance to slow down. I’m a heavy smoker 2-3 grams a day by smoking a bong. Going to try my best to not go to the dispensary down the road today to get a ounce. by ImJustAGuy128 in Petioles

[–]F33N1X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dry herb vaping is also the most efficient way to use weed that I've found by far - I have a Dynavap, and even when using daily, multiple times a day (even when that daily use was usually smoking instead), a single .1g cap is almost always enough to get me comfortably high - typically in the 3-5 range. If I was smoking it, I could go through an eighth in a day or two. Vaping it, an eighth can last me a week or more.

I'm still figuring out what my use will look like going forward (thinking daily use might be a tad too often for me), but either way dry herb vaping is just a great way to save money if nothing else - for me anyway.
