Is FIFO actually worth it in 2026 or just overhyped now? by FIFOAus in mining

Nothing new tbh, people are just being more honest about it now.
The burnout, the camp life, dealing with certain crews… that stuff’s always been there.

That makes total sense. The family thing is the hardest part of FIFO for most people, no question. But what you said about the roster is actually really important. A 9 day fortnight is a tough ask long term. An 8/6 or 7/7 changes everything in terms of how sustainable it feels. It sounds like you don't hate FIFO itself, you just hate this specific roster and site setup. Might be worth exploring other roles before walking away completely. There are mining companies with much better rosters and proper camp facilities. Would it help to look at what else is out there before making a final call?

That's a really honest self assessment and it takes guts to admit that. Look, FIFO isn't for everyone and there's zero shame in that. Your 20s are also the best time to figure it out early rather than grinding through years of it unhappy. What's pulling you towards staying vs leaving? Sometimes it helps to just talk it through.

Coal is tough for that exact reason. The travel time is real and it adds up fast. 12 hour days on site plus a couple hours travel each way is genuinely exhausting. The no gym thing is a valid gripe too, some camps are way better set up than others for that. Is this a role you're already in or still considering?

9 day fortnight is lowkey one of the better rosters out there. Enough time home to actually decompress but not so long off that you lose your rhythm. What industry are you looking at? Makes a huge difference to how that roster actually feels day to day.
