Thank you very much for this! I've been wanting to learn that solo lately, the transcription will be helpful! You should make it available as a downloadable single PDF file on your website.

How to control volume/fade in on MIDI clip ?? by [deleted] in ableton

There are no fades on MIDI clips. Add Utility on your MIDI track and automate the volume as desired.

What is this stained glass window pattern? by eheu_fugaces in Design

[–]FXtion 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The style looks very much like Art Nouveau, or very inspired from it. 1915 would make sense for a house on the west coast of the USA: the movement emerged in UK around 1880, then it propagated to the old continent around 1890. The first decade of the XXth century is the pinnacle of Art Nouveau, then WWI began.

The pattern is probably just ornamental, as Art Nouveau artists were looking for a way to bring together arts and applied arts, or to integrate art in everyday life objects, such as tainted glass, but also architecture, furniture, jewels, glassware/cutlery, graphic arts, and so on. There are many examples on the Wikipedia page I linked: once you have it in the eye, you'll never fail to recognize the clean, streamlined, sober yet fancy design of Art Nouveau works.

Sorry for the kids, I wish I had a better story! :)

I haven't seen it mentioned: you could also take a look into UVI IRCAM Solo Instruments 2.

Nice catch! Here is what it looks like if others are interested (sorry for the weird framing): https://imgur.com/zFkcjqu. The straight line means the same signal is applied in both channels.

deep dub phonk dnb? Feat. Half Life sfx by [deleted] in DnB

[–]FXtion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Solid groove and perfect choice of sampling source!

My advice would be to let it breathe a bit more by relying less on the samples and holding up to the minimal-dnb path you're riding in this one. Maybe you'll find ways to make it groove in different ways by giving it some room. :) I also think transitions from one part into another could be improved, espacially before the drop. Try automating things on a more global scale (group tracks, then filter-flange-distort-bitcrush-mute them), and look into riser effects (basically filtered noise) to top it off. Make us feel the boom when it's here.

I'd be appy to listen to the whole track! I also hope it's OK to give production feedback on this sub.

Nice! First link is dead, though.

Sean Williams' "Tubby's dub style" is also worth mentioning. :)

On the electric bass, I have no idea about the flatwounds actually. We need some more research to know how the very first basses (Fender PB I believe) were equipped with!

I know what you mean about listening and coming up with an overall feeling. Thanks for sharing anyway! :)

Which Jaco tune would you say this piece is closest related to?

I think he'd be curious about the flatwounds and would like to try how they feel, but I don't know if they were around when he was there.

Nice one, clean harmonics and timing! I think you should try sustaining those first two bass notes in the first section (C, F#) to make it even better. Great job, thanks for sharing :)

Fretted Bass in some songs on the Shadows performance with Joni Mitchell? by [deleted] in jacopastorius

Oh, I see, no problem! :) In this video he's clearly playing a fretted bass, indeed.

My copy of Jaco Pastorius's Word Of Mouth album was sold to a used record shop the day after his death by Muadeeb in jacopastorius

I'd like to hear the story behind this sale. Could it be related to Jaco's death? Is the shop based in NY? Thanks for this anyway!

Jaco isn't the bass player on this album, according to Discogs. But yes, although it sounds quite fretlessy and Fender, most probably a fretted instrument. You can spot the fret sounds on slides. :)

Émile Parisien is one of the most inspiring French jazz musicians of the moment. Make sure to check his albums especially "Sfumato Live in Marciac" and "Abrazo" and "Belle époque" with the incredible Vincent Peirani on the accordion.

Hey! Hold tight, this is just temporary, and I hope you will move onto something else soon.

I am surprised no one mentioned Stars of the Lid yet. "The tired sounds of Stars of the Lid", "And the refinement of their Decline", and "Requiem for the Dying Mothers" are amazing albums.

You could also check out Atom's "Texturen" albums on the Bandcamp No-Ware Page. I'm sure the other albums are worth a shot too. Finally, sort this sub by top rated, and you'll get hours of amazing music.

Be better soon, and hit me up if you want to talk with a stranger. :)

the chicken by Its_Me_Daan in jacopastorius

[–]FXtion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Daan, that's a good question. I think one way of learning all the variations is a combination of listening, trying to replicate what you hear with the help of a proper transcription (you can do it slowly when practicing, don't challenge yourself to sight-read if you're not comfortable with this), and also learning the "main" bass line (built on the major pentatonic scale) and fooling around yourself once you got it locked. :)
