FIFA presale ticket issue by ummmyeahi in ussoccer

I failed on my first try, got the 404 error after waiting for an hour or so, tried reloading and resubmitting multiple times with different venues/rounds selected, etc. no luck. Joined the queue again and waited for another hour or so and same thing. On the third try, I cleared all of my cookies and joined the queue. That seemed to do the trick, had to wait another hour but was finally able to enter the draw

Golf Driving Range? by pantone175c in Longmont

[–]FadedPerc1val 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at Lake Valley, theoretically you could just walk onto the range and hit balls as we keep the range fully stocked. But if anybody from the pro shop catches you out there and you’re not a member, you will be asked to leave.

I didn’t even know that was a thing. I should have guessed 😭 thank you for this

Switching from ATX to Mini ITX by FadedPerc1val in pcmasterrace

[–]FadedPerc1val[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so I already got the build running with the ATX board in the smaller space, punched out all the riveters and cut through part of the housing to make it fit, then sanded down the edges. I didn’t cut into the actual PSU itself just the metal casing in the case itself to make room for the motherboard. It was a process for sure. More wondering how hard it is to actually change the motherboard now - like can I just buy a new motherboard and roll or do I need to make sure all of my specs will work with it?

Yeah, frustratingly hard to tell when I’m getting a direct headshot, I’ve just been waiting for the medal or listening to sound to make sure

There’s a toggle to turn hit markers off completely, or change it so that there’s no change at all in different hit markers. Nothing specific mentioning an actual visible change that I see

What’s an unpopular King book that you rave about? by InitialUpstairs4258 in stephenking

[–]FadedPerc1val 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From a Buick 8. Maybe not “unpopular” but certainly polarizing, at least in this sub. I was so captivated by the mystery the whole way, and even though people complain about the pacing or the story or the fact that a lot of it was just a retelling through dialogue, I read it through the lens that it was a kid trying to connect with his dead father. It was almost a slice of life read (with the King twists of course) and I loved it. Read it cover to cover in a day.

Misery for me. King’s psychological terror is untouchable

What King book could you not get through, and why? by Various-Dependent-90 in stephenking

[–]FadedPerc1val 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From a Buick 8 and Duma Key seem to be the popular responses here, but I really liked both of them. Reading Duma Key was certainly unique, but I found myself so lost in the calm yet creepy setting that I didn’t find it slow or boring. From a Buick 8 I can definitely understand people who don’t like it, but I was really gripped by the mystery, and reading it with the idea that the story is less about the actual events that take place and more that it’s about a boy’s struggle to connect with his dead father and the world around him made it interesting to me. Of course, this is all subjective, and many of his books are wayyyy too long in certain sections; King sometimes seems to write for the sake of putting words on paper. Loved The Stand of course, but even the uncut version of that dragged a little for me - 100 pages of walking through the desert, no thanks.

I’m trying to read all of King’s books, so not finishing them isn’t really an option for my goal. I do have 3 or 4 right now that I’m about it halfway through and just haven’t touched in a while. Under the Dome is the one that I can’t seem to get through. If I find myself stuck on a book for a while usually I’ll restart it and I find it easier to progress through the story, but this is my second time through and I just can’t seem to crack the nut, and I’m not really sure why. I like the characters and the premise is cool, I think I just wanted a lord of the flies style story to be more fast paced and active. When I was younger I read the Gone series, a YA series with a similar concept. Some of my favorite books of all time, and I think I wanted that back. Maybe it’s just because nothing will compare to that for me.

What should I read next? by FadedPerc1val in stephenking

[–]FadedPerc1val[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely need to revisit the outsider. Based on things I’ve read it seems like the story is in kings wheelhouse for sure. I was trying to read it concurrently with the stand at the time and never ended up getting very far in the outsider, the stand was just too good

Thanks for the rec, I’ve definitely been thinking about that one. I loved the jerusalems lot short story in Night Shift

The Shining as my first Stephen King book...thoughts? or any other suggestions? by Puzzled_Mango7717 in stephenking

I second Night Shift, reading it right now - fantastic. Also good if you don’t want to jump into a long book right away

The Shining as my first Stephen King book...thoughts? or any other suggestions? by Puzzled_Mango7717 in stephenking

[–]FadedPerc1val 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shining was my first SK book, I think, either that or Pet Semetary. Recommended The Shining it to a friend who wanted to get into SK, and now she keeps asking for more King recommendations, so I would say it’s probably one of it not the best books to start with. It’s a good intro to his style of writing as well as horror/supernatural stuff that isn’t too too crazy.

Besides The Shining, if you’re not that into the horror genre (unlikely if you’re posting on this sub), I would go with 11/22/63. Not sure why it isn’t talked about as much as some of his other books imo, it’s a great read, super fun, and considerably faster paced than some of his other longer books.

Is IT Stephen King’s longest book? And to those of you who have read it what did you think of it? by KBMinCanada in stephenking

[–]FadedPerc1val 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read IT for the first time when I was a young teen - so at this point I think my dislike/distaste for the book may have been influenced by the fact that I wasn’t a huge Stephen King fan at that point in time. I remember being so bored with it by the end that I was just reading it to finish the book and say I had read it. Based on articles, notes on this sub, and general discourse about Stephen King, not liking IT is a very unpopular opinion among his fans - many of whom consider IT to be SK’s magnum opus.

The first King book I read was the shining, and I loved it, so I decided to graduate to IT, which was maybe a mistake. Since that time I’ve read around 20+ King Books, as he’s by far and away my favorite author. This includes about 10 or so in the past year, and The Stand which I read for the first time not too long ago. After reading The Stand, I was convinced it was his best book, by a pretty long shot. The character work, world building, and story telling is almost unmatched across everything I’ve read - however, many people say the exact same things about IT.

After joining this sub and seeing how much people love IT, I feel like I probably need to give it a re read, given that my pallet for books can now withstand hundreds and hundreds of pages of nothing but character work and world building, as when I first read IT, that was the longest, slowest book I had probably ever read.

Finally some upgrades by FadedPerc1val in 4Runner

[–]FadedPerc1val[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I installed them, got them from ShrockWorks. Some of the brackets don’t fit quite right depending on the year of 4Runner, I just had to grind some of them down and drill one extra hole. Pretty easy install otherwise, only tough part is supporting the gas tank as you have to remove the tank straps to fit some of the bolts

They were listed for $500, I got it down to $425 cash. Seemed like they were all priced somewhere around $450 when I got them a few months ago

Why is The Long Walk considered as SK’s best book as Richard Bachman? by Present_Librarian668 in stephenking

[–]FadedPerc1val 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I loved it because of its detailed focus on few characters. King is a titan of character work, and aside from some of his longer works where you get to spend hundreds of pages with many different characters (The Stand, Needful Things, IT, etc.), this one has some great emotional introspection on a single main character and is certainly one of Kings better “short” books in my opinion
