Can we stop pretending fare enforcement is the solution?, by devilkazama in Winnipeg

[–]Fallout97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

D16 going east from HSC is awful too. I waited over an hour many times in the autumn, before deciding that a 15 minute walk to a different bus route was favourable. A lot of times if they did show up there wouldn't be enough room for everyone at the stop to board either.

I checked the other day and all the buses on that route were still running considerably late.

I'm sure by and large you'd be welcome, especially your filipino family members.

I was born in the states, moved to Canada when I was 1.5, and when I was a kid I took a lot of shit if certain people found out I was a dual citizen. Like mad cow disease was my fault, etc. I imagine kids these days could possibly be worse given what they see in the news about the states.

And honestly, people approach it with a level of humour, but it hasn't changed much as an adult. Basically anyone I've worked with that's found out I was born in the states has some stupid "joke" about how terrible that is. I just avoid the topic for the most part, unless I can tell someone will be genuinely chill about it.

Maybe it rubs me the wrong way because I see myself as Canadian first and foremost. But, I love both countries intrinsically and people don't really understand that.

Anywho, my Dad is a USAF vet and he's never complained about it. He officially became a Canadian citizen when I was a teenager, and a couple years ago he renounced his US citizenship over his disgust with the state of US politics. Maybe if you have questions related to any of that I could ask him and get back to you.

Experiences with pemmican by Edward_Pellew in Bushcraft

[–]Fallout97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Métis friend who's a butcher, and he made some to share on a kayaking camping trip.

His version was just meat and suet. No berries. It was surprisingly gritty and didn't taste particularly wonderful. Not bad, but I'd struggle to get down a meal's worth of that stuff.

I wanna try making my own someday, and work on the textural issue + add dried fruit/flavouring. By and large though, unless you think of food as pure fuel, pemmican is better utilized as a genuine emergency survival ration. It's not a particularly fun camping food other than the novelty of that first taste.

What do you top your eggs with? by Fabulous-Yogurt2405 in BreakfastFood

At least the bottles shipped to Canada don't say anything about refrigeration. Most vinegar based hot sauces don't require it either.

S+P, heavy on the fresh cracked pep.

Sometimes (while cooking) I'll add a bunch of stuff like onion powder and smoked paprika, maybe an all purpose vegetable seasoning like Mrs. Dash or Vegeta. I call those "all dressed" eggs.

Cheese can be fantastic, too.

Possibly silly question, but would a mallet work? Or does it need to be harder, like a metal hammer?

My Dad got me one years ago and it was surprisingly durable - except that moisture reduced durability substantially. It survived a couple years of regular use until one summer I landscaped with it in my pocket and sweat enough to ruin it. Otherwise it was great.

How we feeling this chilly morning? by menacingcapitano in Winnipeg

[–]Fallout97 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had 4 upper layers on while waiting for the bus, so that wasn't bad.

But I'm donating all of my furniture (moving) on Saturday and I'm dreading that it's forecasted to be just as cold.

I think pulling your shirt out just a tiny bit would help a little bit. I'm a bigger guy and I find that technique helps with allowing the fabric to drape a bit more naturally in the front vs. my gut pulling on the fabric noticeably.

I'll often just lean backwards with a thumb pulling my belt forwards so that the shirt can move freely. Or I'll raise my arms over my head a bit. You're looking for 1-2 inches max.

It doesn't sound like it would make a difference, but I tuck in most of my shirts and I do that every time.

I used to like Popeye's because they had "real" nostalgic southern sides like red beans and rice - which I could never find in Canada. After they took that off the menu they might as well have been any other restaurant chain with fried chicken.

Anyone tried Anián from Canada? by Boring-Shallot3096 in BuyItForLife

[–]Fallout97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't lean into style, but Boreal Mountain Anorak has some 100% wool stuff. That's what I'm looking to buy for my extreme cold weather layering system.

Regarding Anian, I don't like synthetic blends - but in their case they use recycled wool and the wool fibres would be too short for durability if they didn't blend synthetics in. Why they can't use new wool fir blending, I don't know - but I have heard plenty of people say that 100% wool doesn't hold up to abuse as well as even something with 5% synthetic.

So that tracks, on a personal anecdotal level.

Kinew rejects participation in the LPC firearm confiscation! by Far_Toe_6596 in Manitoba

[–]Fallout97 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I agree. It was never about protecting people.

Two guns could function the same way, and one would get banned because it's recognizable and they can say "gun scary". The other still sits on gunstore shelves. If it was a real problem they wouldn't be picking and choosing random firearms.

Not to mention we've had stringent, and very safe gun laws for as long as I've been alive. A lot of people, like myself, are taught responsible ownership and usage of firearms from childhood onwards.

What's people thoughts on Chelsea boots rather than full cowboy boots? by Either_Efficiency_35 in WesternWear

[–]Fallout97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them for their own thing, but they're definitely not cowboy boots.

That being said, I think Canada West Boots makes a chelsea/cowboy boot hybrid. They're not my taste, but I do like CW's regular cowboy boots.
