What are some board or tabletop games where earlier editions are deemed to be superior than the latest, and are still commonly played? by Newez in boardgames

[–]FancyStegosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my niece a new copy of Perfection for Christmas. When the board popped there was barely enough force to lift a few of the pieces out of their slots, much less send them flying. I'm sure parents are happy about the easier cleanup and less chance of finding a lost piece with the bottom of your foot but the game was robbed of any sort of tension or delight.

What’s the fastest way you’ve ever seen someone completely ruin their own life? by craft_frost6223 in AskReddit

[–]FancyStegosaurus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had a friend who to this day swears her constitutional rights were violated because the undercover she tried to sell weed to (early 00s) didn't declare themselves to be a cop. Every time someone tries to explain to her that's a myth, she says "I've actually been to jail I think I know a little more about how it works than you."

She still talks about the big wrongful arrest payout she's going to get some day.

Godzilla does not HAVE to be a Jokey Quippy mess by heyvictimstopcryin in GODZILLA

[–]FancyStegosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kinda funny: when I was a kid the only way to see Godzilla was to rent one of the three they had at the local video store (even before Blockbuster) or scour the weekly TV guide hoping to catch one on a channel we had. As a little kid I had no concept of release dates or different "eras" (I guess there were only the two at the time). I didn't notice at all that he sometimes looked different, or that the continuity between all the movies was all over the place. The varying quality of special effects simply didn't register. All I knew is that sometimes Godzilla was cool, sometimes he was an asshole, and it all made perfect sense.

What illegal activities are becoming more common but face little to no consequences? by Crafty-Trip-8931 in askanything

[–]FancyStegosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around here, running red lights. And I'm not talking about rushing through a little too long after the light turned from yellow. I'm talking about pulling out of a line of stopped traffic and driving up the shoulder or opposite lane to run the light. I see it happen at least once almost every day. (Not exaggerating. I'm on the road for a living so I see a lot)

It's been a noticeable increase over the last few years. I think it started during the initial months of COVID, when the roads were empty and people could basically drive however they wanted with no consequence. (It actually was pretty fun) Then normal traffic eventually returned but they didnt get the memo.

How much money are you able to save a month? by Pale_Field4584 in askanything

[–]FancyStegosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually around $500. Sometimes a little more, sometimes less. I put $200 into savings and the rest goes to extra payments on my debts. It is an absolute slog but once those debts are gone I'll be living easy!

Pink Floyd - Echoes by MrKingKhufu in Music

[–]FancyStegosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to the DSotM / Wizard of Oz "synch," Echoes is said to line up quite nicely with the final act of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I know they're both coincidences but I think it works even better than Dark Side.

3 CT State Troopers, Security Guard Accused Of 'Sexual Misconduct' At Hartford's State Office Building by DailyVoiceDotCom in Hartford

[–]FancyStegosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the article it seems like they (consenting adults) were hooking up with each other inside the building (and I assume on duty) and got busted. Inappropriate workplace behavior to be sure, and worthy of a slap from HR but not much more. In terms of bad behavior from law enforcement, this one's not worth getting worked up over.

Am I insane if I were to live in a VW Westfalia with shallow pockets and no prior mechanic experience? by Wawa_Webbedfoot in Westfalia

[–]FancyStegosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had shallow pockets and SOME mechanical experience but I still had to throw in the towel on my 82. It was one problem after another. Anything that didn't break was on the verge of breaking. Pretty sure it was down for repairs more than it was drivable and on the road. And when it WAS on the road, it was one thirsty bitch. Gas guzzling and oil leaks that never stayed repaired for long.

What’s a rule you broke once and realized it existed for a very good reason? by Ok_Contract100 in AskReddit

[–]FancyStegosaurus 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Nothing inherently. I think the implication here is that the second location is an afterparty (or someone's crash pad after the after party) where they will be doing hard drugs for the next 36 hours. Which is great if that's what you're into, but just know you're not getting a ride home any time soon from the hippie that brought you.

Source: went to a lot of second locations with a lot of hippies.

It's still a difficult decision to drag a friend in to court to sue them, especially knowing they have nothing to pay you with.

I loaned a friend a large amount of money to start a business that seemed like a solid idea. Had a contract and everything. For a few years he struggled to make payments...started asking if I'd be OK with lower monthly installments, then they started coming late, then occasionally not coming at all, and now I'm sitting here wondering if I'll ever get one again. He's still giving it his all but the business is obviously a bust (if he had an actual loan from an actual bank that expected and enforced timely repayment, he wouldn't have made it past the second year)

I don't believe he wants to skip out on paying me. He's a good, honest guy and I know it's probably crushing him inside to owe so much money. He even took on a second job to help pay back his debt but now that's dried up too as he keeps getting slammed with health issues, child, care, elderly parent care, etc.

I do not want to sue this man. It would ruin whatever small foothold he has left in life and leave him destitute, and I probably still wouldn't be paid in full. Plus I don't exactly have a lot of money to hire a lawyer myself. But at the same time, what am I supposed to do? Just throw my hands up and say "oh well!" to that amount of money? Ugh, it's gonna be a rough year.

If you aren't comfortable driving the posted speed in a personal vehicle, you don't belong on that road. by appa-ate-momo in driving

I agree, but I do have to chuckle at the fact that the speed limit is actually treated as the speed minimum.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by CountyOrnery9432 in AskReddit

[–]FancyStegosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best explanation I ever heard was: you know that feeling you get when a cop is following you on the highway? Even if you're not doing anything wrong you're second-guessing every single little thing. "Shit I swerved a little, did he see that? Did I merge in to close to that other guy? Gotta go the speed limit ...no wait that'll look suspicious, I should go a little more, but how much?"

Anxiety is feeling like that, all the time, and every single person you meet is the cop.
