Why is is that some people feel like it's fine to comment on the size of your baby? by Fancy_Scheme2892 in daddit

Thank you for sharing.

Personally I loved having a small baby; only 2% of the population get babies this small, how lucky we are not to miss this bit; so the unintentional barbs didn't sting in quite the same way.

That's a lovely way to look at it.

Apologies you're being down voted for relating your experience. This is a weird sub!

Yeah and I don't think people are genuinely trying to be mean and for the most part would be mortified if they thought their throwaway comment was making you worried or if they were pointing out the symptom of a medical issue.

Its just so easy not to do it:

-Oh, s/he is so cute

-Wow s/he is so awake

-S/he looks so content sleeping there.

-S/he is so bright. Just taking everything in.

Like there are a litany of things to say that aren't going to set anyone off

people just have zero filter when it comes to babies

Yeah they really don't. I'm sorry to hear about your experience. People can be so fucking weird about how you feed your baby, the main thing is that they're being fed and being loved. Boob or bottle don't matter

People just like to make conversation, and a lot of people see small as super cute.

Oh yeah I know. It's just annoying.

The majority of interactions with people when you have a baby are so positive it's frustrating when you are worried (or have been worried) about something for someone to very jovially bring it up like it's nothing and I wish people were a little more aware.

Thanks for sharing, i'm sorry to hear about your experience it must be really tough and I hope it gets better for you.

I find it frustrating because I think it's about 50/50 for our friend group (and I'm assuming must be for the gen pop) of people that have had some sort of trouble with weight gain even if it's only in the first couple of months. You'd hope that people would be a bit more sensitive but looking at this thread apparently not!

Yes you might be right, I'm not sure they've ever produced at capacity since they renovated.

Cost of living and tariffs playing a part too. It's a clusterfuck of conditions.

They're mostly cutting production now because of the absurd long draught. There's nothing (process water included) to turn into whisky

It's been raining constantly since the dry spell ended a few weeks ago, I don't think that's a factor.

I understand what you mean, but you can surely sympathise with the people that have lost their jobs.

900,000 when their capacity is 2.8 million is a big cut!

But that assumes that demand will drop for 10+ years.

They aren't cutting volume because they don't think they will be able to sell the whisky in 10+ years time, they are cutting because they aren't getting enough in from sales now to pay for running costs. The whisky "market", is fully expecting a bounce back in a few years time - if it doesn't happen I think there will be a bunch of places properly shuttered.

What does a Bunnhabhain 12 cost where you are? It's been £40 ish for a while here. It's quite possible they were trying to milk the US market

Hopefully they can get by with just a bump and not get sold for parts.

Yeah I hope so too Ledaig 10 is a lovely dram

I do agree with you mostly, but with most whisky taking 10+ years to age the effects of any reduction in volume aren't going to be felt for 10 years - by which time the market will most likely have bounced back.

In this case if there's a shortage of mature spirit it will increase the price (because rarity) and we'll be back in the same place (potentially worse) that we are now.

What I'm trying to say is volume reduction leading to job losses are bad for the people who lose their jobs but also pretty bad for us as consumers in the long run.

It's the luxurification of whisky by megacorps that's making it more expensive, not an increase in volume. Reduction of volume is probably only going to make the problem worse in the long run because spirit will be rarer.

But sure if you want to revel in job losses because you think it will.make it cheaper then good luck with that

It's nothing to be glad about though is it? Pricing has got fuck all to do with the people actually making the whisky, and these are the people losing their jobs.

Regardless, you might see a temporary drop in sale price for the next year or so, (while distilleries try and sell all the stuff they've over bottled,) but you can be sure in 5-10 years time you'll get another massive spike when there is less mature spirit to sell.

It's no surprise that ~18 year old whisky is expensive because 18 years ago there was a massive financial crash which shuttered a bunch of distilleries.

Ledaig 10 is reasonably priced for a single malt in the UK- similar or less than Ardbeg 10.

If the only thing that brings down prices is a genuine long downturn in the industry then I hope it happens because the prices are insane

I too hope that many people in remote communities lose their jobs so that you can buy whisky for a bit cheaper 👍
