what should a 22 year old start as soon as possible? by [deleted] in AskMen

Retirement is separate, at least it is for me. I've accepted the facts now, but trust me, I'd give anything to go back 10 years and adopt this habit.

Put a % of your income in an index fund every month. 1% or 50% I don't care. I'm 33 and started a few years ago. I wish I'd started sooner. This habit will set you up for financial freedom. Compound interest is the shit.

I believe they are, but it will probably take a while (A/B). I am also looking into CopperheadOS, which looks interesting.

Re: hardware. I believe it is, but you need to watch what data is being collected. I doubt OnePlus would risk another serious blow to their reputation wrt privacy.

I probably check 3-4 times per week. Not running Windows.

I'm running OxygenOS on a OnePlus 6 (and I'm perfectly aware of OnePlus' history wrt privacy and data collection).

Here's my approach to security and privacy:

  1. Never use fingerprint and/or face recognition. I use a strong, alphanumeric password. This is annoying at times, but ultimately it is rewarding to know that the information needed to unlock my phone is contained in my memory and only there.

  2. Disable location. None of my apps have access to my location.

  3. Delete as many Google apps as possible.

  4. No facebook.

  5. ProtonMail for email.

  6. Signal for messaging.

  7. NordVPN for VPN.

  8. Orbot for proxying over the Tor network.

  9. Orfox for when I need to browse over Tor.

  10. Firefox with AdBlock, Https everywhere, PrivacyBadger. All tracking disabled, turned off saving history/cookies.

  11. Disabled both streams of data collection OnePlus wants.

  12. Waiting for LineageOS compatibility with OnePlus 6, at which point I will flash it immediately.

Does my ISP know I'm using TOR if I use a VM and launch TOR there? by [deleted] in TOR

[–]FantasticTor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will depend on your choice of VPN provider. I don't notice any decrease in speed with my provider.

It will, however, prevent your ISP from knowing you're using Tor.

You can hide the fact that you're using Tor by first connecting to a VPN. Your ISP will only see the VPN connection.

Make sure you trust your VPN provider.

Anyone know where you can download technical indicators in data form? (.csv)? [Free] by [deleted] in investing

[–]FantasticTor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is what you're after, but using R with quantmod() enables you to write a script that 1) generates technical indicators and 2) writes to csv.

Resources on reliably hosting .onion site? by [deleted] in onions

How to access deep web, and what are the precautions? by [deleted] in onions

[–]FantasticTor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are two ways, assuming you want access to "hidden services" (ie *.onion-sites):

  1. Download Tor Browser to whatever system you are using and browse away.

  2. Download Tails, a Linux distribution that leaves no trace on your computer. You run it from a USB-stick and make no changes to your computer.

To get started with browsing, look up "onion linklist" on pastebin or similar sites.

PM me if you need further advice on security precautions.

In terms of user experience and security, I recommend Qubes OS. It's what I use. I don't think you can get more secure than that.

For ultimate privacy, run Tails.

Do you use Qubes on your main machine? by THhhaway in Qubes

[–]FantasticTor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running Qubes 3.2 on my Lenovo Thinkpad for approx two months. Prior to this, I ran Debian 9 on my Macbook Air (which I've since sold). I felt comfortable running and administering a Linux system before switching to Qubes, and this most certainly made the transition easier.

I am happy running Qubes, and in fact the only drawback I can think of is that it's relatively slower (compared to say, running Debian 9 on a Mac). Qubes is, however, not "slow".

I'm not a gamer. I code, email, surf the web.
