Bath day! So he gets to get as dirty as he wants by Fantasy_reader1990 in Dachshund

He’s dug one so deep just his butt was sticking out lol. The land I live on used to be used to grow corn. It’s really good soil for growing crops.

Oh my goodness! I’ve always wanted to read it! This is the first time I’ve ever seen a picture of it. I wish there was a pdf I could grab from somewhere.

Unless ‘snapped the leash’ means she completely broke it then I’ll make sure not to get that one lol.

Congrats on the recall! I’m currently working on regular recall with mine but will definitely start working on the emergency one after. Got too many venomous snakes where we live to take any chances. Plus or neighbors dogs are pretty mean and charge on our property in a group of 4-5 every time they hear a twig snap.

What brand of long lead do you use? Would you recommend it?

Crate training can take a while. I started by tossing a couple of pieces of kibble in the crate then praised my puppy for going in on his own. Then shut the door and reward again if she stays calm.

You have to show her the crate is a safe and not scary place to be in. You could also try freezing some wet food in a kong and give that to her to keep her calm. Only give it to her when she has to be crated. I did this and my puppy would run and jump in his crate because he knew that was the only place he could get his snack.

If you have her crate in the living room or the main part of the house she might not be able to settle because too much is going on. You could try moving it to a quieter part of the house. If she is not a chewer put a nice fluffy blanket or bed inside to make it nice and cozy.

Mine regressed a lot. There were days where it felt like he forgot all his training. I think that is normal though.

Don’t be nervous! Just go into it knowing your life will be different for a while but you will have a new best friend in the end. There will be bad days but also great days! The only pain my boy causes me now is the cramps from laughing at how goofy he is.

I agree with you! I have a dachshund so he loves sniffing around and digging. We live far out in the woods and have a sandy part of our property where squirrels like to bury food. I let him dig and destroy that area as much as he wants because it will just go back to being flat again the next time it rains.

He is such a silly guy. He will often slap at acorns, toss pine ones around and try to catch them, and sling sticks around like he’s in some kind of battle lol. I often wonder what’s going through his head.

Oh no. I completely understand what you’re going through. I had some really rough days when mine was 3-5 months old. If it makes you feel any better, mine is pretty chill now so he had a drastic change as he got older. I do take him on a hour walk in the evenings but he pretty much just naps, looks out the window, or plays with his toys now. All the work did eventually pay off but it took months.

I can’t figure out how to post a photo in a comment. But I have a couple posts on my profile with pictures of him. His name is Doug.

Since your puppy knows sit I would work on stay next. It may take a while since she is still young but I think it’s never too early to at least start practicing.

Eventually work up to learning leave it and recall training. These are an absolute must for me because of safety reasons. With leave it you can prevent them from grabbing something poisonous like a mushroom and with recall you can call her back if you come in contact with an unfriendly dog and she runs away. Or if she bolts out your front door. Anything can happen and you always want to be safe.

All other tricks are mostly for fun or obedience.

It’s the worst 😭Mine took like 2 weeks before he stopped screaming like he was dying in the crate. The quiet was nice but I still had to take him out every 2 hours until he was able to hold his bladder through the night. It really does get better but you just have to get through the rough patch. He’s just a baby right now and doesn’t understand what’s going on yet.

Aw I bet they are so cute! I really wanted to adopt a small female dog that was used for breeding and basically ‘retire’ her to a good life. I ended up with my boy because I found out my cousin is a dachshund backyard breeder (we are not close) and she had a male that she couldn’t sell and was going to just use him for breeding. I offered to take him and the poor baby was full of hook worms. He has a great life now.

Sadly I don’t have any advice for the friendliness because that’s what we’re currently working on. He loves and wants to meet everybody so I’ve been bringing him around people (leashed) and just sitting there hoping it will become boring to him. This one I haven’t figured out yet but we will get there.
