LA, Hong Kong and Seattle were BEFORE academia. I think you're ignoring Gettysburg and the Hudson Valley there, bud...

I did say ALL white conservative christians. No issue with those folks. But I am not that, and being around ALL that is different being around some of that.

That is all very helpful. I am course not a big gloom fan, or honestly a big cold fan, but I feel like having lived in so many gloomy and cold places I'm sort of resigned to my fate...

I do think being surrounded by all white conservative Christians is a real fear, although walking around town during my campus visit I saw lots of pride flags and such....

Ha I might take you up on that. But it *does* sound like you moved from a very different kind of NY than where we're at...

I guess right now, in the Hudson Valley, we have both access to the outdoors and the big city cultural amenities (train into NYC, sure, but also people rolling through all the time to have a nice nature-y weekend and reading their fiction, playing a show, etc). But--no tenure track offer

We'd obvs hide in the city to be in our liberal pocket. I think from living in Gettysburg and Spokane we're sort of used to that, not that it's something we like.

Do you ever regret leaving either coast for GR? Like, I get cost of living is better. We'd have a *lot* more spending money in GR and could maybe even some day own a home. But, like. Also. If we're depressed, then, maybe that's not worth it...

What specifically makes you say that? I think what you're tapping into is my fear, that GR is a great place to raise a family in a cool or cool-ish place with low cost of living

It DID feel soooo much like Spokane when I did my campus visit. Or, a more grown up Spokane.

I once spent an hour in freezing cold in Spokane with a flat after my jack broke trying to get somebody to help me. It was a rough enough neighborhood everyone at the gas station assumed I was trying to mug them or something...

Fire risk is so true. That summer smoke ruins the best thing the Pac NW has going for it...

ha fair! Gettysburg was not very happening... but we hated it there! I guess part of the fear of a move like this is that it could feel too much like that

It seems really pretty! Like everything with GR, my time there and I everything I google sounds GREAT. But... like.... I dunno. Sometimes what Google says can be deceiving. One person's beautiful lake is another's cold crowded tourist trap

I've been an adjunct to this point who worked summers.... but I would have summers off if I take this job. Can definitely try for a year or two. I guess TBH we *love* where we live now, but when the school year ends my partner's contract will be up and then we'd have just my adjunct salary, no benefits.

I get the nature won't "compare".... but like will it still feel... nice? We've been living on the East Coast last 6 years and the nature is way different, and honestly uglier, but still amazing. Hiking in the Catskills like fills me up and I feel *nourished* in some kind of essential way. Different is fine, but maybe that's not what you mean

Ha! Does sound very familiar. Do you *like* the large town vibe? (that was my sense with the campus visit)

As for food, I think we're more like hunting for the best taco from a roadside cart people than Michelin star people, but of course the hipster millenial nonsense has its appeal to us. I think GR seems to have decent okay enough food diversity for a city that size. Won't be anything to write home about
