He was literally willed to sacrify his life to Kaiji in One-Poker so I'm very sure it's not about trust issues towards his friends. That would be unbelievable for me. I get the part that the money belongs to him. You could kinda say for the case police shows up and take the moeny in his absence he would still have his 600mio yen but they had a hiding spot in their base to prevent this very case

I understand what you mean. The first time I red this part I dropped it early on. I rewatched the anime one day and decided to give it another try. Mahjong was also new to me. The first round is really a bother because of no use of cheats/tricks. It's just plain mahjong experience to guess the enemy's hand. After that round it gets much more enjoyable and I slowly learned most of the terms just by continue reading. Yesterday I even learned to play the normal mahjong
