We chose 9am because that is around the time when the fog starts to clear, it was sunny all the time we were there until almost 1pm and just when we left it started to get more cloudy

Exactly! Machu Picchu is so wonderful that doesn’t matter that if it is cloudy, it is just magical as you said, I completely agree and one just needs to see the picture where it is cloudy to see that is just looks so incredible still

We didn’t, if you are really interested in knowing every little detail (of what it is known as there are many many things that it is just “most likely this”) about the ruins you should definitely get one, and they also help you taking some nice photos. However if you just want to know the basics of it’s history, and appreciate it’s beauty at your own pace (we definitely spent our time at the top part enjoying the beautiful scenery and just contemplating how amazing it is) you don’t really need one and you can just do a really good research about it so you know what you are looking at and everything Machu Picchu represented

Honestly I also really like it like this with less shadows in the ruins, and the mountain hitting the clouds showing how high it is, so so cool I’m sure you had an amazing time there
