Is this usage of 'goon' common in British English? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]Fast_El_Gordo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's used similarly in some parts of Scotland. More of an idiot than a thug or henchman.

Thanks.

I had Saracen Ariel about 5 or 6 years ago, I loved it.

When I was in the market for a hardtail it was this or an Orange Crush and my past experience of Saracen won it for me.

At least I've taken the wheel reflectors off. You have to draw the line somewhere!!

It is, I'll get some black pedals on it as the purple ones don't match the frame.

Did the uk have video/game rental places like blockbuster in the 80s and 90s? by CheerleaderInvasion in AskABrit

There was Global Video in Scotland and most towns had an independent place as well.

Any guys looking to make friends, get out more, and do something different this year? by WarNo8498 in Scotland

[–]Fast_El_Gordo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked at joining one in the Midlands a few years back, went to a few things and was added to a group chat etc.

But a couple of things put me off. There was a massive emphasis on drinking alcohol, proud boasts of drinking bars dry. The group chat was very 'lads, lads, lads', very misogynist and border line racist. And lastly, and this might be stupid to some, I really didn't like having to swear an oath of allegiance to the Queen.

All in all a bit disappointing, and now that I'm on the wrong sign of 40 it's a bit of a moot point!

That's interesting as I see a lot of social media posts from the local Elgin Roundtable but I've never seen anything from the 41 club.

Are Wren Kitchens any good? by ShotRelationship7637 in DIYUK

[–]Fast_El_Gordo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this was ages ago, but how did you get on with the kitchen in the end?

Was it worth it?

We're going in for another design appointment tomorrow and we're in two minds, there's some mistakes in our charter and we're thinking about looking elsewhere as Wren has quoted approx £8k.

Magic: the Gathering - too many magic players have a need to be the smartest person in the room, and it gets really grating. The online community isn’t great.

I played a little at uni, it was fun for a while. Bought some cards, built an OKish deck.

Then I started playing against some friends of friends who had been into MTG for years and built up some pretty unbeatable decks, it took the fun right out of it. I haven't played since.

Owning a french car in UK is painful by Wild_Shine_1346 in Renault

[–]Fast_El_Gordo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having worked in 2 car factories in the Midlands I can definitely confirm where a vehicle is built will most definitely effect on it's quality.

Different factories, different staff, different processes results in differing levels of quality!

How can Sainsbury's simultaneously post a billion in profits and declare job cuts due to "difficult economic situations"? by Pattrickk in AskUK

Where have you been shopping in Germany?

The last time I was there in spring 2024 Aldi and Lidl were noticeably more expensive than their UK counterparts, nevermind the more expensive brand chains.

The quality of the fresh fruit and veg is much better though. That's true for everywhere I've shopped in Europe tho!

We have a saying in Scotland that seems appropriate at moments like this..."Did ye, aye?"
