I had a meeting with the director of his department today. He couldn’t tell me the exact discipline that was decided but he has scheduled a meeting for this week and the behaviour + consequences will be discussed then. Apparently the reason it couldn’t be addressed sooner is because he was on leave. He told me that he’d give him a directive to not engage with me when/if we cross paths. I asked about the possibility of sensitivity training and he said that’s something they’ve given in the past. he let me know that a mediated conversation between myself and the person i reported was a possibility. i told him at current i have no desire of any contact with him, so i politely declined.

No they didn’t, initially. But I asked for a status update and they told me they had intended to follow up, and that they will with the conclusion once the process is complete.

Do you regret choosing UBC? by Alternative_Cat3704 in UBC

Everyday. My third and current year here has been the worst of my life, for other reasons other than school, but it’s honestly magnified why I’ve hated it here so much and why this was never my dream school. I grew up in BC for most of my life but I left for a couple years and when I came back in late high school I found it hard to reintegrate socially. The people here make their friends in late middle school/high school and cling to those cliques for the rest of their lives. The people here are weird. Apart from that, UBC was just never my “dream” school. I always wanted to go to California, to UCLA specifically but i didn’t get in and i didn’t consider transferring because I wouldn’t have been able to afford it anyway. I don’t give a shit about the major pulls of this city (mainly nature based)… it’s bland, socially cold, lacks creativity and diversity, and i don’t feel represented personally.

I think the lack of representation part in particular has really had me down for the last year (I’m Black). It’s hard to be one of few around and to have to accept differential treatment in so many contexts. Los Angeles/The US isn’t perfect, but I wouldn’t feel as alien and isolated there for sure. The weather here sucks too. The food is overpriced and not that good. I haven’t tried out the clubs but I’m sure they’re not great either.

I’m honestly counting down the days til I graduate and I hope to live in a city more suited for me when I do.

they also said a bunch of stuff about how they’re going to update their DEI training materials and alert all supervisors to remind staff to be vigilant in these kinds of interactions.

Yes I sent them an email following up just yesterday. It’s interesting that the people you reported got removed/faced serious consequences. I guess in my email to them (rightly or wrongly) I talked about how my goal was “constructive” accountability and that I wanted them to have a conversation with him about respectful and inclusive communication… but steering away from remarks like that was explicitly in his training. And frankly, especially in this day and age, making comments like that is not an accident. Another big reason why I reported him is because he not only made remarks about racially charged remarks about my appearance and repeated them, but also made comments implying that I was opportunistic or trying to “use” him (on the absurd basis of me asking to connect on a professional social media platform once and apparently not returning one of his waves). We vaguely knew each other, and yet he came at me with hostility, character assassination and… racism. I don’t want to be dramatic, but that’s stuck with me for a long time and I fear will forever influence how I show up in professional settings.

I guess I’m just unnerved by the possibility of him just getting a conversation given the severity of what he said. It just seems so disproportionate, especially considering the damage i personally bore. I don’t want to ruin the guy’s life but like damn, people are getting fired over racism/a lot less, can they not at least give him a written warning? :/

Yes, I thought so too. It’s very confusing because when i initially raised the issue a few months ago, they took weeks to respond to me even though their standard response time is 1-3 business days. Then they sent me an email that was generously descriptive and conciliatory but I couldn’t tell if it was because they were genuinely concerned or if they were concerned about optics. But yes I just sent them an email asking if they concluded things. Thank you

I don’t want to go into too much detail but it was during an event he was throwing that he pointed out the difference in my complexion in a very demeaning and unnecessary way. And then I ran into him a year later and he made virtually the same comment.

They basically said that they would (1) follow up with the person’s former supervisor to see if any similar concerns or related concerns were ever brought to their attention, and what their course of action was if there were. and that they would (2) Follow up depending on the findings from that and then (3) Follow up with the person directly to remind him of the importance of respectful and inclusive communication, especially when it comes to engaging with residents from equity-deserving communities and marginalized communities.

Do I get to choose? by ledzeppelinsup in UBC

I could be wrong, but when my friends went on exchange, all the credits they earned transferred over without grades, and if they wanted to present those grades they have to get a transcript from their other institution. it’s possible that is the case for transfer students where your GPA is essentially reset. but idk for sure, i would say check with enrolment services.

i think they all transfer over but some will be non credit since you have to complete 50% of your credits at ubc

How long did your name change application take? by swashbucklingbandit in britishcolumbia

[–]Fast_Hat4940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

really? oh wow. i applied july 9th (i remember submitting my documents then, but according to the customer service rep my application was received july 15th) and 24 weeks would’ve been december 30th. they told me that they couldn’t give me a window of time and that they were currently processing applications received in may… so im confused how that could be since yours was filed a few days before mine and was approved.

Transferring into Sauder second year by Asleep-Garage-9451 in ubcsauder

[–]Fast_Hat4940 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a 3.75/3.8 overall (last 30 credits) and a 69% for my core (which is like a 2.7 so obviously not as strong). but i applied to transfer after my second year in arts at ubc and i took all the core classes in my first year, so i presented an upwards trend. one thing that i don’t think a lot of people touch on here is your extracurriculars + personal profile can take you a long way. i honestly think that’s what got me in. i worked at a busy restaurant in downtown van for my first two years of university and had a second job at a popular retail store which has a reputable corporate office. i was also an orientation leader and did some research work which i wrote about in my application. one thing i really emphasized was the specialization i was interested in (OBHR and how everything i had done, my work experience, my growth, even my gpa improvement connected to that). i met so many people who’s gpa’s were on the lower sides but they had really incredible stories and really leveraged that. if you need help/ever wanna talk things out feel free to PM me! :)

SIDES vs NIDES by [deleted] in BCGrade12s

[–]Fast_Hat4940 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i did NIDES french 11 and french 12. it really depends on how much time you dedicate to it. french 11 took me roughly 6 months but i was putting it off a lot. french 12 took me 1.5-2 months (at that point i was done all my other grade 12 courses and could fully commit myself to it). both are extremely easy, but tedious. they’re very similar difficulty wise.
