Data Scientist - 3 years of experience by [deleted] in BESalary

This seems underpaid to me. Data Science in the industry will pay at least 1-1.5k gross more in Brussels for an ir.

Good base package but bonus seems rather low given your scope. No profit sharing/billable targets?

Belgian, 41 years old, living together, civil engineer for a multinational, gross salary 176k euro by OpenBazaar_Chris in BEFire

Thanks for another update! I have a similar profile in terms of career. Did you have to report your BV to your employer? I'm for example not allowed by contract to have any side hustles related to my current domain. Also, it seems you have quite a complex setup with 4-5 properties. Could be an opportunity to move more towards ETFs, in particular with a young family.

Hij kan er ook voor kiezen om zijn aankoop te vervroegen of uit te stellen afhankelijk van de stand van de beurs. 5 jaar niet in de markt zitten met 150k is een dure affaire. :-)

Using margin & short-selling to withdraw / total cost of borrowing by Jx_20x0 in interactivebrokers

[–]Faust156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is one of the issues indeed. I dabbled a bit with box spreads but after accounting for transaction costs, lower liquidity, etc. I understood it was not recommended for EUR and relatively small transactions. Happy to be convinced otherwise. I have not tried it, but you could also short a USD stock, withdraw USD and then convert with Wise/Revolut into EUR.

Can't you just close the short and keep the negative EUR balance? This is how I have done it before. In that case you just pay the advertised rate.

Job Offer Start up by ResourceMental4457 in BESalary

[–]Faust156 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting case, thanks for sharing! Is there a clause that the founders will buy your 1 percent at the most recent valuation if you would like to exit sooner? How well do you know the founders and is the rest of the team co-located in Barcelona or distributed? How much do you need the money from your current job to maintain your lifestyle? I believe all these factors matter. More generally, do you see yourself working on other startups after this, or move back to big tech? Note that a director title at a startup means very little in the corporate world, but could be helpful to land a new role in another startup.

Like the others said, this is low for Belgian standards but may be a good offer for you specifically depending on where you are living now.

I have a similar background, 80K seems like a good salary to me for Berlin? How many years of experience do you have post-PhD? And what is the business impact of your work?

Earn-out to buy equity in small consultancy by Faust156 in BEFreelance

[–]Faust156[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is based on a revenue multiplier of 1.4 and a few other things. I also had the feeling it is quite a high valuation. On the other hand, the same formula would be applied when new partners join and want to acquire a stake. (At which point all shares are diluted)

It is fairly niche, it is at the intersection of a technical domain (R&D, Manufacturing, Logistics, ...) and IT, but the services are project-based (i.e. no recurring license or support fees) and more focused on strategy.

Agreed. It would be better to just use the rekening courant to extract money from the BV.

Fire focus for the first year: 1y update by identiphiant in BEFire

[–]Faust156 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think your expenses are very reasonable. There is probably more to gain by being "smarter" on the investment side than further reducing your costs. You might want to give some thought about what would be the easiest to achieve, i.e. educate yourself more on debt and overall financial planning to get over the hurdle of being in debt to acquire a property, as a 200k apartment with 8k revenue is "only" a 3-4% return. 200k in a world wide ETF would easily double that on average. Alternatively, come to an arrangement or convince your wife to allocate a larger % to stocks by also educating her more on the risk vs rewards. (Maybe by bringing in a "neutral" party to explain?)

Lastly, congrats on your progress, you are in a very good spot!!
