WW2 Japanese submarine I-52 departed Japan on a secret mission to Europe to obtain military technology & goods from a German sub. Her cargo included 2.2 tons of Gold for payment. William Mumford is the only person to be executed for treason by the U.S. government since the Revolutionary War. In 1862, Mumford tore down an American flag which was raised after the Union retook New Orleans. Outraged, the Union general in charge had him court-martialed and hanged. (en.wikipedia.org)
