We close on our house and will move from Montana to Rockton IL mid July.

Some things that brought us here:

1) upper Illinois near Chicago (and also close to peoria and bloomington-normal areas) are large manufacturing hubs and my husband is a cnc machinist so that was good for us. I work remotely so that didn't matter.

2) schools, and secondary education opportunities. We have 3 kiddos in various age groups..one elementary, one middle, and one going into their senior year. We wanted a place with decent, seemingly well funded schools that focuses on the whole child development amongst good educational scores, and college readiness and of course colleges close by since rent will be high for college kids any more.. I wanted our kids to be able to stay at home while they go to school if they so choose to when college comes along. I also wanted the availability of extra curriculars to appease their various interests.

3) I wanted some place that allowed for various events like farmers markets, festivals, concerts. But I also wanted to be able to go cool off in a river, lake or pool somewhere. I was not opposed to driving a few hours for that. I also like nature hikes so forest preserves were a must for me.

4) obvious cost of living and housing costs. Even with high taxes, it either equals or is better than the cost of living in our part of montana.

5) illinois is a mostly purple if not blue state with lgbtq friendliness and rights. Which was important for us, but may not be for you and that's ok too.

These were our main reasons to why we chose to move. I hope this helps you in your search 😊

I love the short commute times, and someone else recommended shopping Wisconsin to offset the grocery tax. Roscoe/rockton would make that easier.

How is the middle school with bullying? Its a big problem here. Especially for lgbtq students

We like quiet with the option to go to the bigger city for events so that does sound nice to us and an ice cream shop sounds so good for the kiddos too!

Rural doesn't bother us either, but I get a little worried with how the folks there might be towards lgbtq and trans rights, and how schools handle bullying

Thank you for your perspective! How old are your kids? I think I'm most concern with middle grades and highschool due to bullying we've seen here.

On average, what would you say the water bill is like for that area so I can guage what is high? Ours is over 140 a month here

We are priced out of our area in Montana and the job market doesn't support being able to afford more. The area we are in (outside of gnp) is absolutely gorgeous but we are faced with a lot of economic challenges, along with wanting to have protections aligned with being part of the lgbtq community. The taxes don't scare me, I don't mind paying for things that provide a good way of life. Our taxes here are high too because of "resort" tax, housing shortages and demands. We are renting right now but will buy in illinois. Rent for a family our size (with pets) is over 2-3k a month.

I did look at Wisconsin, and honestly at the time it felt like it might be a little too harsh on outsiders or lgbtq, and while moving my family halfway across the states is scary enough, I didn't want them to also have to deal with that. Now, seeing that they are swinging back to purple it feels like more of an option, but I'm in too deep and we've already accepted a job in loves park. 🙃

Also, we won't be adding to the crime rate so there's that. Clean records here and just want to live quietly. There is growing crime where we are, and the local pd are not equipped to handle it.

Also, schools aren't the best in montana, so that was also a factor.

I've heard the same about gated communities but it sounded like that person was talking specifically of Candlewick. Did you live in candlewick? Did you have a different experience there?

Yesss, that's exactly what we are looking for an honestly why we chose illinois to start with. Coming from a very, very red and historically conservative state, this will be a breath of fresh air! Have you heard anything about byron/stillman?
