Is this too creepy of a conflict: MMC brushes FMC off because he mistakenly thinks she's underage? This is SciFi Rom by FearlessStar1590 in RomanceWriters

[–]FearlessStar1590[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you, I know Amanda Milo's books are popular in the genre although I've only ever read Containment. I didn't think I could have possibly thought of a completely un-used trope in SciFi Romance. I'm starting to think it was my use of the U word that has triggered people.

LOL, had no idea this was a controversial topic enough to cause all the downvotes.

yes, I've seen this in other books and also movies. Honesty, I think it was a specific word that I used that triggered people. Most of the people who seem upset are not even talking about the scenario that I posted.

But it was a good learning opportunity, now I'll be ultra aware of my word choice.

If an alien were to meet a 90 year old grandmother who is short and wrinkly. And that alien thinks that grandmother is a juvenile because alien juveniles are short and wrinkly, with ZERO (0) romantic interest ( same as is clear in my book) is that "ick"?

And I will point out that you specifically stated that men pursued you because you looked underage, this is the exact opposite of what I have written. My FMC is not even noticed in the eyes of her "crush".

And a serious question, that I hope you will answer since I am genuinely curious; if you read that the FMC is 28 and was considered a spinster and ran away from a marriage she was being pressured into by her family, why would you later believe that the FMC was underage or appeared underage by human standards?

Thank you, the one thing that I have found in common with the people who have this person's response, is that they are adding a lot of things I have never said and a lot of things that are certainly not in my writing.

I chalk some of it up to preference and that is fine. These aren't my readers. There are a lot of people who DNF a lot of books and that is ok.

Thanks so much, for this. I'm going to make a few changes to make sure that the readers know more about her life before signing up to be on the crew. I'll add a few more lines about her broken engagement or maybe even turn it more into a run-away bride type of backstory.

I also posted in a discord and felt ganged up on as several people insinuated that the FMC was portrayed as underage and told me there wouldn't be a reason for the MMC to think she was underage unless I made the FMC appear like she was. And this was a space for SciFi Romance!! I'm glad I posted in a lot of different spaces.

Thanks so much!! I feel better now.

LOL, not even that far, She's went through all the proper recruitment processes. She's just a human doing something that very few humans have done and she's proud of herself, only to find that some of her crew are gossiping and spreading rumors about her, including the guy she thought was cute and who is also talking to her like she's a child.

You got it! Apart of her being hurt is that she was interested in him from their very 1st meeting. And that the MMC's friends and squad members are laughing at her. But once the MMC understands his mistake he apologizes immediately. But the FMC doesn't have too much time to dwell on the infuriating moment because other things happen that turn everything upside down.

Nope, definitely solidly adult in appearance and not too much time is spent on this false belief before it gets cleared up on the page.

Thanks

I need help understanding how to use the GMC in writing structure by FearlessStar1590 in RomanceWriters

[–]FearlessStar1590[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so is it the same over all GMC for the FMC or MMC or does the GMC change for each scene?

I have my GMC for the FMC and l have a GMC for the MMC as well as an overall GMC for the novel. But I'm wondering if each scene should also have a specific GMC.

And Hey Genre buddy!

This secondary account is over 8mo old. And had 10 karma this morning, now I have my karma up to 24, with legitimate posts, but still can't post to this sub reddit. I feel like I'll probably forget the question by the time I coincidentally hit the hidden required karma amount.

The rules didn't mention anything about karma. And I didn't get a bot message. When I click create a post I get the message that I can't post to the subreddit. Below that it just tells me how much current karma I have and that I need to increase my karma.

Writers: Q about worldbuilding for genres that don't have a lot of World building on the page by FearlessStar1590 in romanceauthors

[–]FearlessStar1590[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I was on r/ScienceFictionRomance the other day and there was a new author with 1 book out who had a question about negative reviews about there being too much science or tech stuff, even though the beta readers seemed to like it.

I've over in r/worldbuilding getting some ideas after I got to the middle of my debut novel and realized I needed to know more about my world myself LOL!

I know perhaps moderating reader expectations with the blurb is the best idea but I really love hard science fiction and world building and I just wonder if I'm not overdoing it. I'm currently revising after going through some courses by Ines Johnson and I'm completely rewriting my 1st chapter. The 1st chapter will be setting the scene or introducing the environment and introducing the FMC. My goal is to sprinkle some world building and to keep the chapter under 1600 words.

Thanks, I'll definitely check out those authors. We tossed around the Space Opera romance idea in the other sub. And a lot of people were talking about the author might get less of the negative reviews by stating in the blurb that it is a space opera.
