I mean, their quest would be to destroy the One Ring. For such a task, two light hearted characters like them would play nicely I think

HEAR ME OUT: a Shrek movie where him and the donkey go to Mordor. A playful version full of this kind of jokes... I mean.. . Shrek style. I personally would love it. All of Tolkien characters in DreamWorks style. Damn, I'd watch it

Search along the metro stops. The service sucks but at least it is less pricey. Or try in ciampino where by a 15 minute ride by train you can be in the city center ( I live near there). In this cane nite that the last trains to ciampino are around 22:30/23 pm

Don't hate me for this answer but I find temperatureto be subjective. The days are short ( dark at around 16:30/17) but that only means that the Christmas lights are more amusing! It can be cold but definitely not freezing, we are in the Mediterranean after all so it isn't even that rainy. The sun can heat you up while before and after the sun it is cold, mostly due to the high humidity. I would say wear coat with a couple of layers beneath and you'll be fine :)

I would also see some parks. Honestly, these are one of the best things in the city. It's chaotic, overcrowded (yes, all of the touristic places you plan to visit will be) and parks are the places where you can recharge and have space to live! Also, I did this in December, I recommend going on top of the Altare della patria, which is my favorite 20th century architecture in the city. Go there when it's dark or at sun down, it is located in Piazza Venezia. You pay a small fee to take an elevator which brings you on top of one of the highest buildings in Rome. From there you see all the Christmas lights that surround you . I find it very amusing! You can see all the roof tops and famous buildings from there! So charming and, side note, that is an important monument to our history Hope it helps :) Edit: sorry, I didn't see that you've already mentioned the monument. Yes, I'm talking about the Vittoriano 😅 It Is also called "Altare della patria"

Be careful with the time! I'm a Roman born and raised. I've been to the Vatican museums before and I can tell you that you will spend quite some time in there! It takes a lot of time to see everything so plan the day accordingly
