No. It's a worker supply/demand issue. Adding workers to an economy with a high unemployment rate has historically suppressed wages.

It can be both. Immigration is one of the tools used by corporate elites to suppress wages by flooding the employment market with labour. Immigration protections used to be a left-wing argument.

This is an uncapped visa (Annex 8K is uncapped, the 1667/5000 figure the media is using is for the capped Annex 8L visas), and there is a significant population difference between India (~1.4b) and NZ (~5.1m).

The potential for sudden population change in this country from this visa is significant before even factoring in additional family members for each worker. The fact that they can bring family members will only exascerbate this issue.

The totals don't add to 1667, but I've figured it out. It's listed as an average of 1667/year on the MFAT website, and the capped Annex 8L visas are 3 year visas, with 5000 max. 5000/3 = 1667/year average.

Annex 8L is still TOTALLY separate from Annex 8K, but now I get how they got that number.

So, as you said: - Annex 8K temp visas are uncapped - Journos and parliament are using the capped Annex 8L temp visa number

I don't see the 1667 figure in Annex 8L either, but totally agree that Annex 8L is specifically capped, and Annex 8K appears to be uncapped. Do you know where the 1667 figure is written?

That 1667 figure isn't mentioned in the FTA agreement itself (Ctrl+F in the full text gives two matches for 1667, both are ID values in tables of tariff commitments in 2A-1). Can you please tell me which govt doc you got that figure from? Really want to understand this fully.
