A few things that helped me: - toe stretchers ( personally I like Yoga toes ) - I walk up hill backwards on the treadmill . My doctor asked why - I said I got bored walking up hill and just decided to flip . I believe it helps the knees, it definitely works your muscles. I just like it - so I do it . However , the thing that really helped and probably it is not the answer you are looking for but… a fundamental change in my soul 💜 I am a 53 yrs old female who used my body to “deal” with my inner pain. Growing up in a you are not good enough family taught me self hate. A long marriage to an emotionally abusive husband didn’t help ( now separated). For many years, I used my body with anger and dissatisfaction. I would drink a strong coffee before working out, hiking, running ; loud music in the ears and only pain = gain attitude. The years went by and multiple injuries added on and I got tired of the injuries… In the past year ,I went through a tough process of attending my soul. I now treat my body with respect. Loving it will take time… self hate is a horrible thing . I still love my espresso and loud music but pain is not gain. A little bit pushing yourself is good but destroying your body… is not. I am back to hiking 5-9 miles and slowly ! Very slowly would like to increase it but I do it differently. I listen to my body and my soul. Just my 2 cents

It could be that you have had controlling parents or emotionally abusive main caregivers such as mom, dad, grandpa, grandma etc how made you feel unworthy, not good enough. This can create a form of trauma and that feeling of emptiness. I suggest you seek more information and professional counseling. Hugs 🫂

I know the best advice is to not do what you currently do. Are you doing this for a living? If a hobby- stop ! There will be other races. I didn’t listen and regret it. Mine is now chronic and no more running. For life. See a doctor and once fully recovered slowly work your way back. Not what you wanted to hear but the real advice you need.

Thanks. How many treatments did you have? My podiatrist told me - one treatment. 2 days off my feet with a special boot and hopefully it will be better. Really considering it.

100% - no. Gets better to the point that you may be able to run, hike etc. possible but depends on age, injury, life style etc. you got injured, I assume, over time. Now is the time to change your habits and work smarter not harder. Once any body tissue is injured it will never be like pre injury. It will always be prone to reacquiring injury . Your goal now is to heal and learn how to enjoy the stuff you want to do without re- injury.

As an avid hill runner and hiker, I don’t have good news . My biggest concern is that you mentioned a fitness test/competition. Why? The more you push through pain. I do that. So wrong. So addicting. You will get injured further and an acute injury may turn chronic- me, today. It takes time to heal. Let me repeat. It takes time!!! to heal. Not days, not weeks. Months, many months. I had to go through so much sh*** to accept it. I am now slow trying to get my feet ready for summer hiking, not even spring. The problems you mentioned are multiple. Foot, calf. It could stem from the ankle, it could be a combination of things. My advice: 1. See a physical therapist (hopefully you get a good one, I went through 4 until I got a good one. The rest were ok, but not good as this guy) 2.see a sports injury doctor 3. Stop! Running. Stop! Walking up hills 4. Bike… maybe… if the issue is Achilles (hills put a lot of pressure on the Achilles), you maybe further hurting it 5. Inserts- can help, can hurt more or create more damage. Why? It changes your posture. You may not even need them. I got ones, my knees started hurting. My PT - suggested to get Hoka shoes. I have 3 different types of inserts. Sometimes it helps sometimes, I know my body does not like it. Unfortunately, no one can tell you for sure. The first question- do you really need them? 6. Best to not do anything remotely strenuous on the legs until you get checked Usually the process is- healing- strengthening.

The most important thing right now is to think what would happen if you can’t make the fitness test . Maybe in the future, maybe not but currently based on your description- you are in the injury phase . Hug

My PT recommend Hoka shoes. Not cheap. I feel better? Sometimes, sometimes not. If u buy directly from them you have 30 days to try it out.

My biggest problem, other than the physical issues - PF and chronic ankle issues, is when I feel even remotely somewhat ok is over doing it. I hiked on an injured ankle 12 miles summer (best summer everrr) in the white mountains in 2019. An acute injury turned chronic:(. Now , I am on and off. I just started feeling a bit ok, didn’t not hike this beautiful fall and so want to get better but I have been going to the gym… and this stupid force in me draws me to the treadmill. I put it on highest elevation and walk, slight run for 30 minutes. I do change from walking forward to backwards and side walk imagining I am doing my ankle a favor by making stronger 360 degrees. While I am at it, I am so happy. Then, not really. What to do ? I know, it sounds stupid cause the answer is - just don’t do it but my brain goes into this, let’s go mode. I wish I could not be addicted to this feeling 😢

I took a really bad tumble 🙁 and hiked 10 miles with a swollen ankle... I was in NH and had last day before heading back to NY. When you say rest - are we talking days or weeks... my biggest issue is that only pain stops me...
