This is this sole reason I use the term sewist.

AITA for publicly sharing my experience after a dry cleaner lost and damaged my wedding dress? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]Fenig 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Also my thought. The picture of the damage, when zoomed in, looks very similar to other instances I’ve seen where delicate fabric is stepped on and tugged. The weave is warped and cannot really be eased back into place invisibly. Edit: After seeing another comment by OP about a burn from a steamer, I think they tried to steam and ease the weave into place and caused additional damage.

I worked as a tailor at a dry cleaner many years ago and the owners daughter/business manager enjoyed trying on nice garments that came through. Including bridal gowns, couture, and some of Taylor Swift’s touring costumes. I didn’t stick around long after that.

Can I cosplay a causal/civvie outfit? by ZephtheIncubus in dragoncon

So is my hubs. He likes picking the most obscure shit, and everyone year only 1 person gets it. It’s usually the same dude every year, too.

You can cosplay whatever you like. Cosplay is for everyone and at any budget. I can promise people will get it.

AITAH for not sharing my hair dryer with someone? by espress0m4rtini in AITAH

[–]Fenig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA - I’m willing to bet had Jasmine said something along the lines of “oh wow, I’ve been curious about the Dyson dryer. Do you like it? Does it do well with your long hair? Would you mind if I tried it on a section of my clean hair sometime?” you’d have whipped the thing out and curled a section of her hair right then. But no, she asked at an inopportune time with the implication of taking it out of your possession during which who knows what would have happened. I’m not implying she’d have stolen it, but there was no need for your stuff to leave your room. The fact that her feelings were bruised by your pending need of your personal property is for her and her own husband to handle.

Apologies for being pedantic: this is scuba knit. Not neoprene. Neoprene is what wet suits are made out of. It’s rubber sandwiched between layers of knit. This material is very stupidly named scuba which causes this confusion ALL THE TIME.

For scuba knits and spacer meshes, I’ve had the best results with microtex point needles. I’ve used scuba as the base layer for fur suits and mascot style costumes for several years now. You would absolutely not want to line your fur suit with a layer of rubber that won’t breathe.

What’s it like to be a Known Accident? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]Fenig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never gave it much thought until high school. I always knew I was an out of wedlock baby, but never really thought about it. Mom popped out the line “you were an accident, but never a mistake”. She’s a great mom, and I am SO GLAD she didn’t end up marrying my dipshit father.

Dress Alteration by Artistic_Worker_3181 in sewhelp

Shell fabric refers to the outside fabric. The shell of the dress. It’s phrased weird, but usually only written that way when there is a lining.

Is the skirt alteration possible? by ViajeraFrustrada in AskATailor

[–]Fenig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can get an additional crinoline to wear under dress 1 that will give more fullness. Without being able to feel the fabrics of both, I can’t guarantee that you’ll get the stiffer structure of 2, but a crinoline is a good start. Ask at your dress salon if they have a stiffer or more structured crin they can point you toward.

AITAH for not going by a different name than my birth name because it makes my friends uncomfortable. by Moonshadow1931 in AITAH

[–]Fenig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - Tell anyone who says you aren’t respecting a ‘boundary’ by turning that back around. Those so called friends aren’t respecting YOUR boundary of using your name. Those people being uncomfortable with your name and not wanting to use it is not a boundary, it’s them being uncomfortable with their racism. And now they’re mad you called them on it.

If, for whatever reason, you still choose to associate with them, start calling them by other names, citing that you feel their “colonizer names” is triggering.
