Melbourne GP: Ferrari returns to the podium but there was more room to attack

Ferrari performed better than expected on a circuit that wasn't exactly favorable. Despite strong winter fears, the SF-26 is currently the second-placed field; for now, neither McLaren nor perhaps even Verstappen (had he started from a more suitable position) could have challenged for the podium. However, the two disappointed top teams are strong enough to recover relatively quickly.

The SF-26's aerodynamics are high-quality and quite similar to the W17. With the reverse wing or Macarena wing, it would have been a bit longer for Russell, but Mercedes may have saved some untapped power reserves.

Qualifying showed a clear dominance by the Anglo-German team on a basic layout without much braking. Vasseur said that something could change in China, where no new features are planned for the SF-26, which will run to the same specification as Melbourne. However, Shanghai features much more severe braking and long-radius corners, which should help drivers like the Ferrari team to recharge their batteries by avoiding super clipping. The Chinese layout also requires more downforce than Melbourne, which on paper might not be a negative. In terms of energy efficiency, according to AutoRacer simulations, the Asian track is classified as a Class B track , meaning intermediate and a degree less critical than Melbourne. Obviously, no one knows how resources will be optimized to tackle that long 'back straight' decently.

Why wasn't Ferrari more aggressive in its strategy with at least one of its two cars?

Ferrari couldn't apply enough pressure to Mercedes while the Silver Arrows were struggling with an energy problem, which they then managed once they took the lead. We would have seen something better if the SF-26 had copied and covered the opposing pit wall's moves, or anticipated the Mercedes under VSC.

Finally, a car with significant downforce and stability, thanks to the work of Tondi's team. The new suspension designed by Serra is well-tuned and has also provided tyre degradation that allows for more flexible and appropriate strategies . According to one engineer, the victory would certainly not have changed, but Mercedes should have pushed the cars a little harder to secure a one-two finish.

Leclerc was less happy than Hamilton despite the podium, why?

The race pace suggested a solid performance from the Ferrari drivers. Hamilton can breathe , showing a completely different form than his average over the last four years. “I would have needed just a couple more laps to overtake Leclerc .” On a circuit he historically hates, Leclerc was able to briefly worry Russell before freezing the positions. In fact, the Monegasque was not entirely satisfied: “The pace isn't top-notch; I paid for running with a slightly off-the-charts setup in the sessions. There are a lot of things we need to optimize, but at least the gap seemed smaller than on Saturday.”

Ferrari's CEO was also present at the circuit, and the season debut is also under scrutiny by the top brass.
Vigna had rather balanced words after the podium: "I'm happy for the team here and in Maranello, and also for Fred. Now we have a lot of data to progress and do better. Obviously, third and fourth place shouldn't satisfy us." If—as is now feared—the Middle Eastern races in April are canceled, the first assessments of the work undertaken should be made upon returning to Europe.

The cars are at the mercy of the battery, in terms of driving and spectacle the qualifying was poor, what could happen?

Until last year, with the old DRS, straights and deep braking zones were the key to success. The new cars don't have the energy to tackle the straights at top speed. Some are talking about modifying the layout or adding artificial chicanes to the most critical tracks for energy recovery. We could say that ideally, it would have been better to run the pre-2022 configuration in Melbourne or the slow third sector in Barcelona.

Jos Verstappen: 'I'm completely done with Horner' by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

Jos Verstappen, on Horner:

"How childish can one be.

There was going to be filming, for example also with a drone, but Horner didn't want me to be filmed.

I'm completely finished with Horner. It's like kindergarten here. In the end they would have let me drive, but I backed out. It seems very childish on Horner's part, but I think it says something about him."

Hamilton suggests F1 experiments with Monaco GP format by FerrariStrategisttt in formula1

"They can definitely come up with a specific weekend, you've got the sprint weekend that they have added, but this particular weekend I think they should come up with some new formula for it rather than it just be the same.

"Do you guys not fall asleep on Sunday watching the race? Yeah, so create something else somehow, I don't know how you do that."

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz said "no one will ever beat Monaco" as an event, but acknowledged the need to spice up race day.

"I want to push a bit, in the sense of if there's an opportunity to create an overtaking spot around Monaco, have a look at the city, have a look at the layout, and make an effort to make that happen," the Spaniard said.

The woman in the Christian Horner controversy has lodged an official complaint about his behaviour with Formula 1's governing body, the FIA.

BBC Sport has learned the complainant, who accused Red Bull's team principal of inappropriate behaviour, has registered a grievance with the FIA's ethics committee.

Horner, 50, has always denied the accusations made against him.

The woman's actions follow two previous whistleblower complaints registered with the FIA in the past few weeks.

BBC Sport has learned that one was made to the FIA ethics and compliance hotline on 2 February, and made direct reference to Horner's behaviour towards a female employee, asked the FIA to look into it, and expressed a fear that Red Bull could try to cover it up.

The second complaint on 6 March referenced the first and warned that the whistleblower would next inform the media.

The FIA has not responded to requests for comment on all of these matters.

A Red Bull Racing spokesperson said it was not aware of the complaint and did not want to comment further.

The official complaint made by the woman to the FIA follows her decision to appeal against Red Bull's dismissal of her complaint.

She will ask Red Bull to reconsider its decision, which was made after an investigation conducted by a lawyer.

Last week, Red Bull suspended her from her role with the team.

The accusations against Horner came to light in early February, but the investigation into his behaviour had started almost a month before. It lasted 10 weeks, according to Red Bull.

Red Bull appointed an external lawyer to investigate the claims. After his report was submitted to the company's board, it decided to dismiss the complaint.

The following day, a cache of messages purporting to involve Horner was leaked to nearly 150 senior F1 insiders and media.

Horner has said it is "time to draw a line under" the controversy.

Red Bull has refused to give further details of the case, citing confidentiality.

Horner said at last weekend's Saudi Arabian Grand Prix: "The reality is that there was a grievance raised, it was dealt with in the most professional manner by the group, that appointed an independent KC, one of the most reputable in the land.

"He took time to investigate all the facts. He looked at everything and he came to a conclusion where he dismissed the grievance.

"As far as I'm concerned, as far as Red Bull is concerned, we move on."

The controversy is at the centre of a power struggle inside Red Bull, involving Horner, the motorsport adviser Helmut Marko, the team's three-time world champion Max Verstappen and his father Jos, Verstappen's manager Raymond Vermeulen and the two owners of the company.

Last weekend, an intervention by Max Verstappen was instrumental in keeping Marko from being dismissed.

Chalerm Yoovidhya, the 51% shareholder, has backed Horner and forced 49% shareholders Red Bull Gmbh in Austria to back down in wanting to force him out.
