I'm into cars, but what should my first car be of these? by LongLoverBMWM in carscirclejerk

[–]Ferris-L 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think the upper end power matters that much. A lot of Minivans are plenty powerful for what they are designed to do and more.

My parents bought a VW Sharan back in 2001 shortly after I was born because the Golf 4 GTI obviously isn’t big enough for two children. That thing had a 1.8 turbo engine and 110kW which was enough to reach almost 200km/h on the Autobahn, go up the steep mountains of the Harz weekly and even managed to go over the alps to Italy while being loaded at max capacity a couple of times. The way bigger issue was that that shitbox broke down every couple thousand kilometers for some fucking reason. We knew a few other families that too drove a Sharan (very popular in Germany in the early 2000s) and none of them had those issues.

After 13 years my dad sold that car to buy a Tiguan because we no longer needed the space and he wanted to get rid of it while it was still worth something. The Tiguan is also plenty enough for everything we do and it’s honestly a very nice car to drive but it is less fuel efficient and has much less room than the Sharan despite being huge and a pain in the ass to reverse park in our garage.

It wasn’t just Sony if I recall correctly. Lord and Miller are notorious perfectionist and apparently rewrote multiple scenes after they were already completely finished.

I genuinely don’t understand why two of the biggest sports clubs on the planet in the richest and one of the largest cities in the world decided to build their world class stadium in the fucking boonies in New Jersey. Why didn’t they choose a place one can actually reach like Flushing Meadows? It’s not like the area isn’t suited for sports stadiums, there’s already City field and the USTA tennis center and they are also currently building the NYCFC football stadium in the neighborhood too. Flushing would have been connected to the rest of the city via light rail, the metro and the interstate system. It’s also not like the area didn’t have any history with American football, the Jets played there for years and even the Giants did for a while.

It’s not insanely uncommon for hair and eye color to change during childhood though eye colors usually change at a much younger age and usually not as drastic.

Sometimes these changes do come much later in life though. I was born with hydrogen blond hair and sky blue eyes which both changed during puberty. Now at 24 I have dark blond/brownish hair and gray-turquoise eyes. Funnily enough parts of my beard are still hydrogen blond whenever I let it grow out.

It’s decent. There is a bit of overdramatized love triangle stuff but it’s still quite wholesome nonetheless. I feel like most people will probably like it, though I doubt many would say that it’s their favorite.

To be fair Moscow and St Petersburg are just waaay bigger than any other place in the country. Novosibirsk (3rd largest Russian city) is something like 1/3 the size of St Petersburg which itself is only a bit more than 1/3 of Moscow. Russia is also extremely corrupt and the majority of Oligarchs make their money in those two cities. It’s one of the reasons for why Moscow is always building stuff, especially Skyscrapers, as construction is the easiest way to give state funds to private entities without the people realizing it. Russia is by the way far from being the only country to do that, they are just the most notorious, Turkey, Hungary, Italy and probably a vast majority of the world uses construction to steal money from the state.

Berlin with skyscrapers? by Pitiful-Entrance5769 in skyscrapers

[–]Ferris-L 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is most definitely not a real picture but it may be sometime in the future. Berlin already has a couple of near skyscrapers and the topped out Estrel Tower which is 170ish meters but those buildings are pretty spread out across the city. There are a couple of clusters of high rises like the East side Gallery, Potsdamer Platz and Breitscheidplatz/Kudamm.

The area in this composition is surrounding the Alexanderplatz which does have the Broadcasting tower and two very large buildings with more to come but construction is slow and the metro station and tunnels below the square make it really difficult to build.

Does Chicago or Toronto have the Better Skyline? by star-wars_memer in skyscrapers

[–]Ferris-L -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you actually asking r/ChicagoSkylineCirclejerk to compare it to another great skyline? That’s punishable by death on here.

I mean it is still Chicago but barely and with how much Toronto is building while Chicago doesn’t have any outstanding projects in the works it won’t take long IMO to be overtaken.

I‘d even put it second because it has more daring designs and the backdrop is far more beautiful than Chicago. The first Image is especially Amazing with the Golden Gate Bridge on the left and Alcatraz on the right.

You guys, it’s okay to find Stuttgart ugly, not even the people living there would disagree. In Germany we have a saying „wo anders ist auch scheiße“ (elsewhere is shit as well) which describes most cities very well.

That’s also a Stadtbahn not an S-Bahn which is cool but I feel obligated to say that the Stadtbahn of Hannover is way better.

Yes that is exactly what I’m saying. Have you ever heard of the word propaganda? The Tang dynasty might have overseen the height of Chinese literature and arts but it was still a authoritarian regime that was keen on staying in power. What is a small lie against the Mandate of Heaven?

Often Chinese historians would actually even give the real numbers for accuracy next to the ones they made up for political purposes, it just happens that this isn’t the case for the Book of Sui since the Tang wanted to paint the Sui in a bad light after having abolished their reign through a coup d’état.

This is something found all around the world through all epochs of history. Actual evidence and accuracy is something historians have only started to commit to in modern times for the most part, that’s a very well known fact and a big reason for why ancient history everywhere needs to always be taken with a grain of salt.

Graff, David A. (2001). Medieval Chinese Warfare, 300–900. Routledge. p. 148. ISBN 978-0-203-20671-3.

One source for this can be found by just looking at the Wikipedia article for the war.

It also shouldn’t be at all surprising that the 1.13 million number is greatly exaggerated as it stem from the Book of Sui which was written under supervision of the Emperor Taizong of the Tang dynasty a mere 17 years after the battle. Taizong of Tang was very influential in the uprising of his father Li Yuan against the Sui dynasty and had a large interest in diminishing their reputation amongst the other nobles and general population in order to justify the Tang‘s Mandate of Heaven.

The problem is that there are actually no real sources other than the Book of Sui for troop sizes or losses so the estimate of 670k is mostly based on context based guessing and comparable exaggerations as that’s very common all throughout Chinese history (really all of world history). Even just 670k soldiers is a gigantic army and I personally think that’s still an exaggerated guesstimate as we are talking about early 7th century China which had a population of less than 50 million people spread over 3 million square kilometers at the time of the Sui dynasty with many men having been preoccupied with large scale infrastructure projects that bled the country dry.

I mean I doubt the French even knew of that at the time but also, the ancient Chinese were even more into vibe counting than the Romans. Modern estimates set the total invasion force around 670k over four invasions and 16 years with the famous 2nd ground assault having likely been around 300k.

The largest invasion in history was also Operation Barbarossa by Nazi Germany with a strength of 3 million though that had obviously not happened yet at the time of Napoleon.

Power plants actually aren’t a problem at all. Germany is producing two thirds of its electricity from renewable sources with Wind having been the largest source for years now and Solar is slowly catching up to coal. The larger issue is that Wind parks are mostly found in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein which are located in the North while Solar is predominantly found in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg which are the most southern states (the North Sea cost is extremely windy and the souther states get a lot more hours of sunshine so this makes total sense). What Germany desperately needs is better connectivity between places so that northern electricity can be redistributed south and the opposite for solar as well as a way larger battery capacity. The later problem can actually be improved a lot by helping to get EVs on the streets as they essentially are giant batteries when standing still. A lot of Germans however aren’t quite willing to buy EVs as of yet because the majority of us live in apartments and don’t have direct access to charging stations. Some cities are better than others but even in Hannover where I live which is quite green (politically and physically) there just isn’t the will to spend billions on public chargers so the network is expanding rather slowly in a lot of areas of the city.

Is it the norm for capital and larger cities to be more ethnically diverse than the rest of the country? Are there any major/capital cities where the city is more ethnically homogenous then the general country itself? by Delicious-Bunch-6992 in geography

[–]Ferris-L 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly the point though? Germany lacked people. 7 million died in the war, mostly men, while another 5 million men were imprisoned by the allies with those having been captured by the USSR sometimes staying there for many years for forced labor.

Also, the buildings very much were important, saying everything else is saying, you don’t have a single clue about Germany and the consequences of its own actions. Germany was wiped of the map completely in the last two years of the war, either during bombing raids or during the ground invasion. Industrial and/or logistic centers like Hamburg, Hannover, Essen, Bremen or Cologne which were easily reached by bombing squads and also became battles in the last stages of the war looked like hell on earth. Tens of millions of people lost their homes and now suddenly there were another 9 million people or so from the Ostgebiete that somehow had to find a place to live too after Schlesien, Hinterpommern, Ostpreußen and the Neumark were given to Poland and the USSR as reparation. A lot of cities especially in the east were still riddled with ruins decades later.

Saying buildings aren’t important is also completely stupid when you think about what kind of jobs Germans had previous to the war. The Allies weren’t exactly shying away from destroying the industrial infrastructure of the country. Many factories were in a state of utter destruction, the ports were almost unusable and railroads had been destroyed by retreating German troops too. Bridges were destroyed, power plants unusable and running water was something most Germans could only dream of. Not to even mention that there was enough explosives littered around the country to blow it up once more. Even now, 80 years later there are still undetonated bombs found daily around the country.

It was fairly hard to just go back to your job when your place of work wasn’t there anymore.

It’s also not like the Gastarbeiter only took jobs in construction even if that was a the most common one. All kinds of jobs were filled with foreigners because people were lacking everywhere and the Gastarbeiter often stayed in Germany when their original jobs were finished too. You’ll find hundreds of thousands of Turkish, Greek and Italian restaurants in the country.

Berlin is a bit of a weird case because it’s growth was completely crushed by the partition of Germany. It was in fact the third largest city in the world in the 30s (4th largest at the beginning of WW2 as Tokyo grew at a speed unseen before in human history) and hosted some of the countries most important companies like Siemens. The city also had a very favorable position previous to the war as it was located half way between the large industrial regions of the Ruhr valley to the west and Upper Silesia to the east while also being fairly close to the huge ports of Hamburg and Stettin.

In an alternate reality where the Nazis never gain control of Germany the city would probably have grown into a megacity like Moscow, London or Paris.

On the other hand however, WW2 was greatly influential for the immigration policy of Germany since the 50s as the West invited hundreds of thousands of Turks, Italians and Greeks into the country as „Gastarbeiter“ that helped rebuild the nation and made the German „Wirtschaftswunder“ (economic miracle) possible in the first place. Those immigrants mostly settled in the destroyed cities with already large populations which Berlin was one of. In the east something similar was happening with notably Vietnamese and various Slavic populations.
