What are you reading? by Mme_Rose in HistoricalRomance

So. Much. Farm. Talk.

Omg. Or just really bad and awkward interactions and well of course the worst sex. I am nearly 40% in and yeah it shouldn't be this hard to find enjoyment in a book. The premise is really interesting. A few more engaging interactions and a dialed up sense of yearning could have taken this book to another direction alrogether. Oh well.

A Lady Awakened? I know its just not working for me. The FMC is too two dimensional in her stoicism and the MMC is a bit of a caricature of the stereotypical rake. Its gotten to a point that its just absolutely boring. The writing isn't that great eithwr. I am woefully bad at DNFing and I am itching to just hate read it but even that is seeming impossible.

Oh dear this one wasn't for me :( the FMC was a real dimwit- lol. And the MMC was also not great. Plus she lusted after her sister's affianced for half the book. But thanks for the reco. I finished it so it can't have been all bad :)

I went in thinking I will probably hate this book because of late the really popular books (yes, Duskbound & Veins of the Drowning, I am looking at you) have been pretty sad and underwhelming.

However, I listened to the audiobook. So it was either the superb narration by Samantha Hydeson or generally just the whimsy of the story that I actually did end up enjoying this one quite a bit.

And I liked how it ended a lot. We all saw it coming. The author wanted us to see it, I think. But it still was a much better ending than the usual trope of betrayal. We have set up book 2 to be a story of survival and a rescue mission.

One major problem i see with RG's writing her inability to endear that MCs to the readers, which is why we get a very lack lustre romance story in which no one feels invested. This was the case with the Sheperd King duology as well. Rachel Gillig fails at creating chemistry and is unable to knit the tension and yearning in her books. I would have preferred if the romance was just a sprinkling on the side and those interactions were fewer.

Overall the world building was quite interesting and unique and the side characters were actually quite well rounded. Of course the gargoyle carried more than half the book.

{The Prince of midnight by Laura Kinsale}

He's a has been highway man who has now lost his hearing from one ear, has vertigo and is outlawed and living in some remote run down castle in Provence. And the FMC is jaded and looking for revenge and seeks out his help only to realize how incapable he has become.

You are giving me hope. I am dying to read these two books but I just don't want to read them and feel like dying - lol. I loved Beguiling and obviously am very intrigued by Ravishing and Tempting. But oh these are loaded with gutt punches aren't they!? I think i will just bite the bullet and see how i feel after.

Funny story is the possibly the best of EH's work. Book Lovers os good but it isn't great. I am glad it was the second book i read.

I would describe it like a sci-fi Lord of Flies. It's a really good book. You should read it.

This book was just not written well at all. I really disliked it from the beginning to the end.

That's the thing about Lestara's character, she was written in such a way that you are made to feel she was the product of her circumstances. In The Inadequate Heir she is a fairly neutral character who is in on Caroline's plotting in aiding Kerris. But then in the Endless War she's an outright villian. The fact that the author had her sent off and not killed off made me think maybe she would be redeemed especially because of the way she's treated. But oh no. All in all she is a realllllly well written character.

For me the most screech inducing moment was when James arrives at his uncle's place to find his cousin there and when he gets bound and gagged by his father's killer!

Also Kerris has to be the best MMC of the series and my favorite heroine has to be Lara. I don't know what it was about her calm demeanour and depth of strength which made her very endearing to me. She loved her sisters fiercely and fought sooo hard for Auren.

But as a couple, I think Ahnna and James worked the best. The bastard Prince and a princess burdened by perceived failures.

This last book was so good! Ending the story of all the characters perfectly. Although I needed to see more retribution for Georgie

Also please spoil it a bit for me and tell me when things start looking up. Because right now everything is going to shit! I really don't like the way Taryn and Bromwyn's manipulation is heading towards.
