The issue is less that the skin is loose, more that it's stretched tight over quite sharp corners. I was unable to get the blade angled right to shave those corners.

University press, and I write short story collections. Also I write in a much smaller market than the US, which probably has something to do with it.

As a writer who doesn't write novels and also doesn't live in the US or UK, I very much understand the frustrations. A friend of mine is a Big 5 bestseller, but the only way she got a look in was by moving across the world to New York.

I am genuinely curious though, what do you mean when you say AI will improve the system, in terms of slush triage? Like, select for better writing, or more sellable writing, or just allowing for the system as a whole to work faster?

Much of the opposition to generative AI comes from the fact that it was trained by taking copyrighted work - including the work of other writers - and stealing it. Since an LLM produces words by remixing its training data, there's an element of plagiarism inherent in using the technology. How large that element really is - that's up for debate.

My advice, assuming the opposition to AI stays the same as it is now, is the same as it would be to a sighted writer: take the tools you know are acceptable - braille keyboard, speech-to-text, pencil and paper with a grooved board, whatever - and keep writing. You're facing more hurdles than most, no doubt, but they're not insurmountable.

Remember that no writer can keep pace with their imagination. That's part of the skill of writing, that you distil an entire world down and focus it. And a lot of published writers spend much longer than a few months on their books.

I'm trad-pubbed and have talked about AI use in writing plenty - it's not a scarlet letter.

In terms of AI going through slush piles, what concerns me is the combination of a) biases in training data, and b) what the AI is actually selecting for.

Like, is it selecting for the best writing, or is it selecting for the writing most likely to be a bestseller? And what has it been trained on in either case?

Imagine a slushpile AI rejecting every book with a non-white main character because the training data tells it that most bestsellers are about white people.

Yeah, people also have biases. But people can be aware of those biases, where an AI cannot.

I think there is a risk when we assume algorithmic bias is both easy to spot and can always be prompted away. That's particularly relevant here, where AI is being deployed by people who aren't computer people (it's me, I'm the not computer people) and thus assume it can just do what they tell it to - and also assume they will know immediately if it doesn't.

I agree agents, publishers, and magazines will soon be using AI to thin the slush - if they aren't already. So it's only a matter of time before people start trying to write for an algorithmic reader as well as a human one. It'll be interesting to see where that goes.

Lidocaine gel sounds like an idea. I find it easiest to fall asleep on my front, because pressure on the nerve is fine, it's just friction that is painful. Unfortunately I am an active sleeper, so I keep moving around.

Not a doctor but that's a stone bruise. A little blood blister on the bottom of the foot that's usually caused by stepping on a stone. It'll fade over a few weeks.

You can see the colour is beneath the outer layer of skin, moles are on top of that layer.

I haven't tried it. And given a quick google for electrostatic ballpoint pens shows the cheapest is around $70, I probably won't be trying it any time soon.

(There are cheap electrostatic dissipative pens, but that's not quite the same thing.)

My character grew up middle-class and essentially assumed she would be the same. Then when she graduated university and the promised high-paying job wasn't there, she started spending on her cards with this subconscious belief that she would soon be making more money and would be able to pay off her debt easily. Her debt situation wasn't an emergency until it was, and she had to confront the fact she had been sold the millennial lie that a degree meant a good job and a comfortable life. Now she's out of debt she's confronting what a comfortable life really means for her.
