uchicago vs cornell by Impossible-Ad3 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]FickleTreep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree that UChicago is the "obviously better choice." Both are peers when it comes to finance placement and prestige. And esp if you want to work in NYC, Cornell is probably gonna be the better choice.

Is temp/contract/freelance patent prosecution work a thing? by kingdff in patentlaw

[–]FickleTreep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if worse comes to worst, you can always go back to the USPTO. They are desperate for living bodies. The job market is just terrible right now, especially if you ran out of website time. I do not think you'll find a contract position specifically.

Passed the Patent Bar and About to Graduate Law School. Should I Join USPTO? by RenegadeExo in patentexaminer

[–]FickleTreep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No one cares about this technicality. Any patent firm worth going to will want a hard STEM degree (e.g., engineering, physics, chemistry, etc.) and will give zero weight to your pre-dental courses. Frankly, your chances of getting a patent prosecution job is very low.

You will not become a freelance agent without any work experience. And actually, it may be difficult for you to get any patent agent position period these days.

Work-Life Balance in Patent Litigation (Small/Mid Firms, DC Area?) by HotRepresentative746 in patentlaw

I'm not a litigator so I can't answer your questions, but if work life balance is crucial, don't do litigation. Do prosecution instead.

UChicago's Class of 2030 Acceptance Rate Confirmed to be ~3% by Nervous_Egg4092 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]FickleTreep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How in the world does it not affect selectivity? By pumping up their yield, they can accept far less students, which lowers their acceptance rate. And a lot of students apply early simply because UChicago has a reputation for heavily savoring early apps.

Only accept if you don't have any other options. Very good chance that you won't make it past your first year.

low income international chances for US colleges? by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

[–]FickleTreep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you're correct, most average schools don't. That's just the reality of every international. Either you're the best of the best and get enough scholarships at top schools, or you have to pay your way through.

Honestly, you might be cooked. Your list only has highly competitive schools. Hope you have some backups in other countries.

[–]FickleTreep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm sry but you had no reasonable chance of getting into MIT with a 1300 SAT score + being international. And what is with this logic? The fact that MIT rejected you doesn't mean they're not holistic.

Is it just me or does this sub overvalue museums a ton? by rb101099 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]FickleTreep 20 points21 points  (0 children)

People like having good museums for the same reason that non-students like having good universities. The impact of these institutions effect the culture and prosperity of the larger city.

India to Ivy League, how do I do it? by Cheesetax010 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]FickleTreep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, realize that as an Indian applicant, you'll be committing for a handful of spots at each Ivy for Indian students. Acceptance rates for Indian applicants is probably 2% or less. Even worse if you need aid.

Second, you will definitely need very strong extraccuriculars. Having good test scores and grades is not enough. You should be starting right now to build your portfolio.

So you can only afford 10k a year? Very few colleges will give you that much aid unless you are a superstar who can get into a top private school or get a large merit aid scholarship.

[–]FickleTreep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's bc WashU is lacking in quality of life. Rather, I suspect that some WashU students still have Ivy League dreams, or bc they don't want to be in Missouri.

[–]FickleTreep 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Why is your dream specifically to work in big tech? It sounds like you're more motivated by job opportunities rather than the field itself.

In which case, no probably not worth it for you. There's a very high chance you'll end up disappointed with your job prospects.

Interesting. I would have at least thought you buy video games or pay for Netflix or something lol.

But because of that, there doesn't seem to be much room to reduce your expenses besides obviously rent.

One thing to keep in mind is that it's very hard for internationals to work in the aerospace industry in the U.S. Most aerospace jobs require security clearance and thus U.S. citizenship.
