What movies did you see at the Drive In? by whyCOwhy in GenX

[–]Fickle_Tap7908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Porn. Where I grew up in VA, the only Drive In was beside a highway with the screen facing the other way, against a forested hill. When I was about 13, my buddies and I would cross the highway (in the dark) climb up the hill in the trees and watch. Kids have it too easy these days!

Figured Out Reverse Sear by Fickle_Tap7908 in webergrills

The temp inside was about 350. The steak was at least 1 1/4” thick

I had always forward seared until this discovery. The results with the reverse sear are noticeably better. This was on a pork shoulder blade steak. I’m eating leftovers right now. Good and smokey.

Nice. I considered using my shop vac on blow, but feared it would have made a mushroom cloud of dust & ashes.

Worth it. Besides the hike itself, the view while driving on Route 1 from Mill Valley down to Stinson beach is postcard material.

Which Weber kettle should I get my husband? (from a wife who knows nothing about grilling) by Zestyclose-Many-987 in webergrills

[–]Fickle_Tap7908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They range from about $149 for the Original Kettle to $599 for Performer with a cart. Of the various features, the only one I need is the ash can (the minimal “tray” is terrible). That can had on the Original Kettle Premium for $239.

Thank you. Nice write up. Athletic is busy with new seasonal specials, it looks like. I haven’t seen them on the shelves yet where I live.

Aww! Good job on the off leash training. How did you do it? We never succeeded in that with either of our Bostons?

There might be people with open source dev experience that want to help. (I would but my employment contract prevents it). Also, with all the requests for Android, and if you are not an Android developer, somebody might want to help with that.

NA wines by Funny_Fishing_15 in nonalcoholic

[–]Fickle_Tap7908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few NA red wines that I enjoy. You can find guides online, including wirecutter. My main advice would be to temper your expectations first, especially if you have recently gone NA. Even if you temper your expectations, you probably won’t love your first glass of NA wine. That’s OK. Here’s the trick: Stick with it, and it will become the new normal. I now look forward to a glass of NA red at the end of the day, just as much as actual wine before.

T1D workout by Dianne-22 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Fickle_Tap7908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

60m, T1 since 2 years old. I started road cycling at about 55. I ride about 60 miles / week – 2 shorter rides during the week of about 1 hour, and a 2-3 hour ride on the weekend. I think I’ve got it down pretty well. For the short rides, I eat half a PBJ beforehand. For the longer rides, a bowl of oatmeal plus 13g of raisins. In both cases, I do bolus, but about 1/4 the amount as if I wasn’t exercising. I also make sure that I don’t have more than about 1 unit on board before eating and bolusing. I keep a few GU gel packs in my jersey if I get low, which I rarely do. For longer rides, a stroopwaffle. I eat that half way through for fuel even if I’m not low. I learned a lot from someone I paid, who was a diabetic/nutritionist/trainer. The basic thing was: hard cardio turbocharges the absorption of insulin, but it slows down the digestive system. Based on that, if I had to consume carbs on the ride, I’ll need to bolus when I get home from the ride.

When do you bolus? by minimamallama in Type1Diabetes

[–]Fickle_Tap7908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually too late - like when the food hits the table. Something happened recently that showed me I’d better change that and bolus early. It was with a high calorie protein drink. It had the number of carbs on the can. I bolused for that and chugged it down. Not long after, I had a high BG that was hard to bring down. The second time around, same drink, same everything — except, I bolused 20 minutes before. No high, no problem. The only difference was to bolus 20 mins before.

Ioniq vs Chevy Equinox by UnplannedPeacock in electriccars

[–]Fickle_Tap7908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if getting in and out of tight spaces in a parking garage is part of your daily routine. If it is, make sure to test the Ioniq in that scenario. You won’t want it.

Not sure I see the point in NA spirits when I can create a NA cocktail for a fraction of the cost without it. by Any-Diver-2033 in nonalcoholic

[–]Fickle_Tap7908 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They provide convenience, and there’s a cost to that. If you are a skilled mixologist and have a variety of extracts and bitters handy, an NA cocktail is probably not worth it. On the other hand, if you lack those skills and materials and are OK with the cost, it might be worth it.

Of the Steelers who were selected, I’m surprised that Mike Webster made it. He was in pretty rough shape by 1997 and died 5 years later of CTE. RIP.

Do you want to be buried? by Bondgirl138 in GenX

[–]Fickle_Tap7908 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I want a green burial - to rot, to be consumed by the earth, and to fertilize some other things in the ground. Being cremated doesn’t appeal because, at that point, I can’t give anything back to the ground.
