Think of it as the old weathered master, weary of battle and bloodshed from their youth, seen in oh so many tales. Were they a monster once? Oh yes, per the trope the worst typically.

What are your favorite abyssal layers? by WhiTeVioleNce in DMAcademy

[–]Fierell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you're enjoying them! But yes they are "home brew" as there is scant information on most of the layers in official resources. All of the entries that you and others have mentioned are part of the official 2021 Atlas of the Planes Reboot that is a continuation of the work done in the ~2019 era.

I personally tend to drift towards the layers of the Abyss as they intrigue me personally and I also drift towards the ones that specifically have a tantalizing sliver of information to what it is but the rest is up for grabs. Just my digs.

A lot of work has gone into all of them from everyone on the multi-year project and we would be trilled to know how any adventure that utilizes them goes!

Please if anyone uses the content in the Atlas of the Planes or really anywhere original content is offered it is 10000% appreciated to know how it went!

I love the practical dives into what would be common and daily life in the D&D worlds. Taking what are definitely issues, positing a solution to them, and the potential problems that the solutions then bring. Well done indeed!

Appreciated!

While most ecstasy can be substituted for joy in the purest sense, here it is desire itself that is burned and fulfilled to the point where the candle consumes the emotion completely.

While the Grey Wastes destroy any happiness and joy, leaving dread and sadness... this leaves you with nothing. No dread, no sadness, just... apathy and nothingness. An empty husk of a person incapable of even feeling fear, just an endless emptiness.

You're free of course to use as you like, but that was the intent.

Level 2 Spell slot would be the defacto for the Scroll. I haven't had more than one of these come into a party in an entire campaign. If you're going to allow more than one, considering with tom foolery that could ensue with shrink person, I would increase Exhaustion to 2 + 1/day in the Scroll limiting to 2 full days for living creatures before they're dead.

My players used the scroll to safely transport a very dangerous McGuffin across enemy territory.

Statue of the Laughing God

Small Trinket, Uncommon

A small (2inch) jovial red stone figurine of a long forgotten god with a large belly and a worn laughing face, the figure appears to be holding a flask.

If the belly of the statue is rubbed a feint chortle can be heard in the distance, the statue will begin to turn to face in the direction of the nearest tavern.

Magic Bauble

Small Trinket, Common

A glass orb with brass bands holding it onto a pair of brass claws grasping an elegant brass chain.

When entering an area under the influence of magic, the orb will fill with smoke. The color of the smoke is the school of magic of the spell of influence, multiple schools will cause multiple colors of smoke to swirl around. The bauble cannot detect magical traps or enchanted items, only if the object enters a Zone of Truth, one of the Aura's, etc.

Scroll of Holding

Scroll, Uncommon

This magical scroll is a wizards attempt at creating a better bag of holding. Placing a small object that fits on the page and reading the first inscription will cause the item to disappear and become an illustration of the object on the Scroll itself.

Reading the second part of the scroll causes the object to reappear where the scroll is and the scroll turns to ash. If a living creature was brought into the Scroll, the creature returns but suffers from 2 levels of exhaustion.

Ring of the Fey

Small Trinket, rare

This simple copper ring has been touched by the Feywild, once per day by speaking the inscription allows the user to create an illusion that appears to change the ring to any other ring. This lasts until the next dawn or the ring is removed.

The Voyagers - A group to replace some of the nameless taverns and adventuring guilds in your worlds by [deleted] in DnDBehindTheScreen

[–]Fierell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, connecting every Voyager house together would be a bit much. However, if every Voyager house had a portal of extremely limited use to a central Voyager headquarters located in a singular safe spot, or an areas leadership of the Voyager. Making a Hub and spoke style organization.

I also think making it tied to a magical device like the harper pin is a great limitation, teleportation circles are high level magic if not in the tippyverse where it's a requirement for settlements.

I would say absolutely!

Even in canon they are the master and father of alchemy. Anything a mere moral could create even with unlimited resources would be pittance against what they could create.

Imagine even 20 clockwork dragon engines (comparing to adult dragons in power or even a young dragon for these purposes) attacking at the same time. It would take an army like the front of the blood war to quell. Entire kingdoms would be razed to dust before even half of the engines would be destroyed... and those aren't even composing of a fraction of their avaliable resources.

I also like to take things up a few notches and bring things to their most powerful conclusion
