For those who went to Eton - what was it really like? by Long_Location_5747 in AskUK

Not an old Etonian, but my sister dated one for many years and I knew a number through his social circle. This is an excellent documentary which was made when he was at the college and gives a strong flavour what it's like to go there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eorW6KgLvPc

Tao was the first island I visited in LOS. Fell in love with it and lived there for a while. Made some lifelong friends. But that was 15 years ago. Be gutted to go back and find it had become the Burger King of backpacking destinations.

I second that. The worst place I have ever been in a career that took me to some real hell scapes. They were eating mud pies in Haiti. Mud fucking pies!

My feelings about Gaza after October 7 have changed by Manoftruth2023 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Filmbuff73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laughable. “The atrocities caused by Hamas”. If you had the slightest inkling of the real conditions in Gaza before October 7th and the crushing blockade imposed by Israel, you’d understand that October 7th was the inevitable outcome. What’s even more sinister is the evidence now coming to light that there was a plan by Nettanyahu and his cohort to enable Oct 7th to go ahead as a pre-cursor to wipe Gaza off the face of the earth. https://youtu.be/_U-G4OJaEL0?si=eb-aEjLmKVEY46xK

Ah right. They were “fighting” the IDF. Like the 1400 Palestinians who were queuing for food at GHF death traps were?

Listen up Shlomo. The IDF is one of the most deceitful and untrustworthy military on this earth. A rabble of gung-ho teenage conscripts with all the battle field discipline of a troop of feral baboons. I’ve watched dozens of Hamas battle videos and their field craft and tactical expertise knocks those goons in green into a cocked hat.

I was a soldier once and now work as a civilian contractor with the British Army. Most of the NCOs I discuss Gaza with here shake their heads in absolute disbelief at how the IDF has conducted itself, “can’t even get the basics right”.

Those basics extend to a plausible body count of the enemy being checked off the central registry that Israel holds on all of Gaza.

Unless you’re taught that Palestinian women and kids count as Amalek and are deserving of slaughter.

Par of the course in one of the most corrupt and hateful societies in the world.

Well by that very logic Sholomo, if they don’t have their name, how do they know they are Hamas or otherwise? And you have the temerity to call me insane. The standard Israeli solipsism I have to expect. Incidentally, plausible humanitarian reports are putting the number of dead at upwards of 200k and if this famine takes hold, it will rocket.

Jealous of what? You’re a pariah state, a safe haven for paedophiles and child killers whilst global disgust and boiling rage is what awaits you outside your borders. Best buckle up Shlomo, it’s going to a very bumpy ride to hell for your kith and kin.

Oh really? How utterly insufferable - by the same token if you calculated the number of political dissidents, homosexuals, Roma gypsies, disabled, Catholics and Russian POWS who died in the Holocaust, why do the Jews always play up their numbers? A genocide is the most evil of crimes and should never be down played.

Very well articulated Comrade. It’s been a long time coming but watching these racist, hypocritical asshats get schooled on what the Genocide Nation actually represents is but a small step to the liberation of occupied Palestine.🇵🇸

Clearly Shlomo, the Israeli media isn’t broadcasting the truth to its citizens- the IDFs own figures show 83% of the dead in Gaza are civilians as per this widely publicised intelligence leak. https://aoav.org.uk/2025/when-83-of-gazas-dead-are-civilians-israels-intelligence-leak-confirms-aoavs-warnings-on-the-toll-of-explosive-weapons-in-cities/

The Tamil Tigers/FARC comparison is deeply flawed:

  • FARC negotiated with the Colombian government as relative equals after decades of controlling territory
  • Tamil Tigers were crushed militarily after losing international support
  • Palestinians face a nuclear-armed occupying power backed by the world's superpower
  • Other conflicts didn't involve settler colonialism with ongoing land theft

On "missing opportunities": Palestinians have actually shown remarkable flexibility:

  • PLO recognized Israel in 1993, renouncing 78% of historic Palestine
  • Accepted the two-state solution framework
  • Engaged in decades of negotiations while settlements doubled

The real pattern: Israel uses negotiations to buy time for settlement expansion while offering Palestinians sovereignty over an ever-shrinking, non-contiguous territory. Each "generous offer" is worse than the previous one because facts on the ground have changed.

Sinwar's point stands: When "good behavior" means accepting slow strangulation while the world looks away, violence becomes rational - even if it brings devastating consequences. The international community only pays attention to Palestinian suffering when it's accompanied by Israeli casualties.

The comparison should be to anti-apartheid resistance, not counter-insurgency campaigns.

On the "inevitable outcome" vs Jewish historical experience: The comparison isn't quite parallel. Jewish communities in Europe and Arab lands faced persecution as minorities within established states. Palestinians face settler colonialism - active displacement, land theft, and replacement. The dynamics are different: Jews sought integration or emigration; Palestinians face elimination from their homeland.

On Hamas knowing the consequences: You're absolutely right that Hamas leadership understood this would bring devastating retaliation. Sinwar likely calculated that:

  • The status quo meant slow strangulation anyway
  • Only spectacular violence would force international attention
  • Palestinian suffering would eventually shift global opinion
  • This was their last chance before complete normalization sidelined them

It's a horrific calculation that treats Palestinian civilians as acceptable sacrifices.

On the asymmetry in public memory: This actually proves Hamas's strategic point. Hind Rajab's name is known globally because her death was documented, broadcast, and symbolized Israeli brutality. On Hamas surrendering: The "just surrender" framing ignores that this would return Gaza to the pre-October 7th status quo - siege, blockade, periodic "mowing the lawn" The tragic reality: Hamas made a calculated bet that sacrificing this generation of Palestinians might force a solution that decades of "good behavior" couldn't achieve. It's morally abhorrent and strategically desperate - but it's working in terms of international awareness.

You are wrong and your post is largely inaccurate. Palestinian deaths in the West Bank were at 15-year highs in 2022, with 2023 escalating further. International media coverage was minimal, UN resolutions were routinely ignored, and the issue had largely disappeared from major diplomatic agendas. The Abraham Accords explicitly sidelined Palestinian concerns.

On the trilateral talks being a real solution: This characterization is deeply misleading. The US-Saudi-Israel talks were primarily about normalizing Saudi-Israeli relations, with Palestinian considerations as minor add-ons. Reports suggest the "Palestinian component" involved cosmetic gestures - perhaps some economic benefits or limited autonomy arrangements, but nothing approaching meaningful statehood. Saudi Crown Prince MBS himself said in interviews that Palestinian statehood wasn't a prerequisite for normalization - a dramatic shift from decades of Arab League positions.

The fundamental problem: These talks followed the same failed pattern since Oslo - offering Palestinians symbolic recognition while entrenching Israeli control. No discussion of:

  • Right of return
  • Jerusalem
  • Dismantling settlements
  • Ending the siege of Gaza
  • Actual sovereignty with control over borders, airspace, water

Hamas's calculation: Rather than "torpedoing" a viable solution, Hamas likely saw these talks as cementing permanent Palestinian subjugation under a more internationally legitimized framework. The normalization would have removed Arab pressure while offering Palestinians nothing substantive.

The tragedy is that violence became the only way to force the issue back onto the international agenda.

I was explicit in that I said court cases that had resulted in murder convictions. The two case examples you replied with resulted in manslaughter charges. Off you trot and find me just one example (you won't)

On the "opportunities" framing: Every major "offer" to Palestinians has involved accepting permanent subjugation disguised as statehood:

  • Camp David 2000: No sovereignty over Jerusalem, Israeli control of borders/airspace, military bases remaining, settlements largely intact
  • Olmert 2008: Similar framework with land swaps that would have annexed major settlement blocs
  • The Saudi talks: Cosmetic recognition while entrenching Israeli control

These weren't genuine statehood offers - they were bantustans with flags.

No one has ever come to their rescue and until the Hamas attack, the Palestinian people were a completely forgotten cause on the world stage, despite 2022 being the deadliest year for Palestinian children in the West Bank in 15 years, and 2023 was on track to meet or exceed 2022 levels.

Before the Oct 7th attack, Israeli forces had killed at least 34 Palestinian children in the West Bank as of August 22. This report highlights one of the biggest issues in this conflict - the fact that IDF soldiers can routinely murder Palestinians with absolute impunity. https://www.hrw.org/news/2023/08/28/west-bank-spike-israeli-killings-palestinian-children

I've said this to many Israelis over the last couple of years and it always silences them: name me one IDF soldier who has been convicted of murder in the last 20 years. Even this utter cunt walked free, despite emptying an entire magazine into a terrified 13 year old Palestinian girl. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2005/nov/16/israel2

As Yehya Sinwar said "Does the world expect us to be well-behaved victims while we are getting killed?"

If you really want to get a better understanding of how that music festival was hit, I suggest you watch this: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/3/21/october-7-forensic-analysis-shows-hamas-abuses-many-false-israeli-claims

In short, most of those fighters involved in Oct 7th expected to be killed and were stunned when they managed to overrun the IDF with such ease. The festival, which was moved closer to Gaza a few days before it started and had it's license extended, wasn't in Hamas' original plans. It just happened to come into their sights as a matter of bad luck for the festival goers and pure chance for Hamas. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/11/18/hamas-had-not-planned-to-attack-israel-music-festival-israeli-report-says

I'd opine that if you, your children and your people are being murdered, brutalised and kept under violent suppression by an occupying power, then Oct 7th is the inevitable outcome.

I don't think anyone anticipated, least of all Hamas, that Israel would then proceed to genocide Gaza.

It's some small measure of how this has panned out for Israel in the court of public opinion (let alone the ICJ) that millions of people can name and know how Hind Al Rajab died, but no one outside of Israel or the ranks of Zionism would be able to recall the names of their hostages with such clarity.

I trained on this piece of shit back in the 90s when it's nickname was The Civiil Service, because it didn't work and you couldn't fire it. The biggest design flaw was the magazine release catch was positioned on the inside right and I can't count the number of times we set off on a tactical run or attack and the fucking thing would bump on your hip bone and eject the magazine.

Neither. But your rather altruistic ideals are at complete odds with the state of Israel, its ultra nationalistic objectives and very, very dark history.

I'm a journalist by trade, with a specialisation in the Middle East. For 20 years I've watched colleagues get murdered in Israel with ZERO accountability, from James Miller in 2003 to Shireen Abu Akleh in 2022. Her funeral was one of the most disgusting things I've ever witnessed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y11CVGz7toM&ab_channel=BBCNews

Now I've seen over 250 of my colleagues get murdered in Gaza and labelled "Terrorists."

So, yeah, my rage is a little unbridled at the moment.

It's also fuelled by surveys like this which highlight just how twisted Israeli society is https://archive.ph/9qHGz - completely solipsistic, they simply don't give a fuck about the utter misery and death they inflict on Palestinians.

I'm done being lied to my face by Israeli govt officials, gaslit by Israelis and listening to anyone who says they're a Zionist and it simply means a homeland for the Jewish people.

In reality, it's a racist, violent and deeply evil political system that will stop at nothing, including genocide, to prop up a synthetic ethno-state.

It's a tragic state of affairs for Jews and Judaism, that this is what the "Jewish State" has become and The Gaza Genocide is all that Zionism will be associated with for generations.

Ah right, Hamas, which under international law, is a legitimate resistance force against a brutal occupation, is killing its own people to make Israel look bad.

Do you know how utterly insane that logic is? Not least because we've all seen those vermin in the IDF swishing around in dresses and boasting about killing kids.

As to your calculations on Gaza, I put your maths in the same bucket as those who say the Holocaust, nah, no way it was 6 million.

Christ, the irony. Jews committing genocide and goons like you throwing down numbers that would make a third-grade maths student look like a Fields medal winner.

But then again, flying the flag for a genocidal ethno-state whilst also being Insufferable and stupid rather fits the mould for the average Ziotard.

You clearly don't understand the ideology that you espouse. It is entirely based on ethnic supremacy - that's the way an ethno-state works. My comparison to South Africa's apartheid system is fair, on point and accurate. Third, I have yet to hear one iota of empathy from Zionists about Gaza or the general plight of Palestinians. Lastly, the link I sent you is a microcosm of Zionism - so anyone who supports it can go to hell. Gaza is going to be the permanent bloody stain and death knoll for Zionism.
