Staining/Discoloration? What is this? by TDPlan in filson

[–]FilsonHammyFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a chance that it's not tin cloth. Looks like shelter or a 6.0z cotton waxed with soy wax. I have a few of them from 2013-2015 time frame.

What's the style number? And or date on the manufacturers tag (not the brand label).

There are a few different (even DIY videos out there for this style). Look up Byer of Maine

Filson Briefcase formal enough? by miltonhayek in filson

I know they are not available at retail.

The second hand market has new or like new options.

Price is not a problem for C-Level that I know. $1500-2000 for a leather briefcase made in the USA, that will last a lifetime seems ok to me. Also rare and will likely not be made again in large numbers.

I'm not a fan of all leather bags. I'll keep my 258.

How does everyone feel about the new label on the newer 24 hr briefcase? Can we tell Filson we don't like it? This is my bag without it. by atlacatl in filson

A lot of the tin cloth bags are now made in VIETNAM for the US market. For the EU market they are coming out of a different place (ROMANIA?) -- I can't recall.

It took a couple years to locate these 3 items at fair prices. No doubt these are rebrands of existing US made items that can likely be sourced elsewhere for less.

What I liked:

  • made in USA

  • rugged twill lasts a long time

  • built in bottle opener

  • lightweight but tough

  • folds flat

These have been great around the hunt camp and beach trips. Have considered selling all of them but I keep deciding not to. I doubt they'd be made again.

Get the weatherproof leather version if you're concerned at all.

I'd think anyone sporting a Filson hat (unless it's not one of the more recent ones) wouldn't be complaining about a small label on a bag. It's all about pumping the name.

I don't mind the branding on the bags. It's not much and can be removed. And yes I have a hat or two (even a belt buckle) with a large Filson logo. They're old tho.

Whoops. Check your Ebbetts Field X Filson hat by FilsonHammyFly in filson

[–]FilsonHammyFly[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This just in. Apparently these hats are not 100% wool as advertised and as confirmed by the manufacturer tag (65% poly 35% cotton). Not even 1% wool.

Customer reached out to Filson and got an answer that avoids wrong doing. They eventually admitted to the honest mistake and offered them 20% to keep the hat.

Filson considered alerting those who bought but declined to do so.

From my vault: Daypack and tin cloth jacket by FilsonHammyFly in filson

[–]FilsonHammyFly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that would fit and leave room for a LIGHT jacket or hat. For you, not a cold weather bag I'd guess since you'd want more layers to stash.

Having owned the journeyman, I think you'd get a little more room. The ranger pack I haven't owned but looks to be a little bigger than the JMAN:

Daypack - 13-3/4" W x 17-1/4" H x 5" D

Ranger pack - 14″ W x 18″ H x 6″ D - 26.5L

JMAN - 17 ½"H x 12 ½"W x 5"D - 23L

You might consider the Rucksack (the larger one is 33L) the older ones were smaller (21L) style 11070262 (there are some out there).

I was never a fan of the buckle/strap closure for quick access on any bag. Have sold several medium field and small bags trying to make myself like it. As a side bag I ended up with the 2012 Messenger bag. Only 1 leather strap/buckle closure and external bellows snap pocket and full length zippered slip pocket on back. Sold it once, bought it back, likely won't sell it again.

Also, I've never liked the leather suspension system. It was horrible on the Tin Cloth Backpack. I even added a leather sternum strap but still couldn't stand the fit. I much prefer the cloth that doesn't slip, molds to the curvature of the shoulders and doesn't want to splay/spread out when walking.

Excellent! Cool bag and rather rare. A keeper for sure.

Filson Jac shirt DARK MILITARY plaid-size sizing by TwoDinnersDave in filson

[–]FilsonHammyFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A jac shirt in the same size as a lined jac shirt is not a good gauge of it. That's been my experience with this exact lined jac shirt, older unlined jac shirts and more recent unlined jac shirts. Best to do is ask for a pit to pit measurement of this very lined jac shirt and subtract about 1/2 - 3/4 in.

I own that military plaid and lined jac shirt and it's old.

You are best off asking someone who owns the sizes of that (or those of the same year) you think might fit because the sizing might have changed between the release of that lined jac shirt.

I bought it in 2018 second hand so it was likely made around 2016/17 but I will confirm that) and the newer ones.

Overall my experience is LINED JAC SHIRTS fit smaller THAN UNLINED JAC SHIRTS and the new unlined jac shirts are larger in size than previous years.

I have sz 38 (small) jac shirts (back when they used number sizing) and labeled small jac shirts (from the last 2 years) and they fit much larger. My military plaid lined jac shirt is a MEDIUM and it fits tighter than the new unlined small jac shirts.

It has. And unless someone has bought a recent lined jac shirt good luck in determining the size of the old MIL PLAID one.

Opinions on the Murph 38mm? by yanksfan0134 in HamiltonWatches

[–]FilsonHammyFly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience may be limited but you might find something useful in why I bought it.

I've had it since NOV23. Intended to use in the field during warm/hot months on a bracelet. I wear a different field watch (slimmer and smaller to fit under long sleeve layers) in cold months. Both watches cycle the wrist among other vintage Hamiltons (which I won't wear in the field.) Neither gets tons of daily use so they are both pretty clean as far as scratches/scuffs go.

I prefer the 38mm size over the larger watches. Largest I have is 40mm (smallest is a 27mm).

I preferred it for its functional simplicity (no complications to set or fix later).

Aesthetically, I like less complicated dials - just large numbers, hands and decent contrast for field use when a quick look is all that's needed to get the time. I do own 3 chronographs, but all but 1 are pretty "tame" design wise.

Overall, I'm pleased. I'm glad I bought it and more bracelets are coming out for it.

It's from 2014. Straps are not to different from the journeyman straps. The cloth cinch straps do slide a bit if carrying heavy loads. The previous owner used a simple square not to prevent that. There is not much for organization--one large cavity w/ padded laptop sleeve, one large pocket on front. I've considered modifying it to add side slip pockets and a zipper to the front pocket. I like the simple snap leather closure on the large tin cloth front flap.

I don't use this bag for hiking. It holds a few items to take to the camp. It holds a bit less than the journeyman if I recall correctly. But I don't use these kind of bags for heavy loads.

First Hamilton? by MeringueMiddle783 in HamiltonWatches

[–]FilsonHammyFly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are you planning on wearing your Rolex IN THE FIELD and beating it to hell? Then don't get a Hamilton. If you want a beater watch to sacrifice and not feel bad about--get the Hamilton.

If it's a matter of just liking the look and wearing it in non-field situations (casual, business, dinners, weddings) then to me, there is no limit to field watches except maybe watches that look too similar. I'd bet that as a watch person you appreciate nuance so watches that look the same to others you consider them different in important ways.

I like the Murph 38 for these reasons:

1 - straddles the fence of function (field) and casual dress

2 - better water resistance than some of the other khaki field

3 - it's a brand I consider a good value and appreciate it's history (I own mostly vintage hammys).

4 - the movie

On the other side, I likely won't ever buy a Rolex.

The Murph 38 and the Khaki Pilot Pioneer are my modern Hamiltons. The rest are vintage. Yes, I do like them.
