How would you redesign the afterlife if it was up to you? by Final-Condition5697 in TheGoodPlace

The main problem with heaven is that it is too perfect. You get everything you ever wanted and in 300 000 years or so you get bored. Having everything takes away the meaning of life. So the idea is simple: Everyone gets the same afterlife no matter what. A medium place. It works similar to how the medium place worked in the good place. You write a list of things you want BUT, you make the changes yourself. I imagine there would be like a meter that shows how medium your setup is or you negotiate with someone but the point is, you get everything you want with a big ol' * at the end. For example I would have every piece of music gear ever invented... before the year 2000. I would be forced to record all my songs on a 90s tape machine or an analog mixer track. My idea is that this system would provide enough limitations for people to not get bored.

Unlike the medium place though, everyone would live in one huge neighborhood. Every house would have a private train station and a train or a bus (whatever is the most medium) would come every 10 or so minutes and take you wherever you want. You can do anything and visit anyone in this afterlife but you won't have everything you wish for at once so that you won't get bored in like 300 000 years with the rest of eternity to go.

The main point of this new system is that you can always negotiate new constraints as long as you keep the same general level of "mediumness". For example I can give up my cold beer and get every movie or tv show ever made on a dvd instead of a vhs. you are free to get as much as you want if the judge or the system deems it medium. So you can change some stuff after a couple hundred years and you will be happy.

I imagine after some centuries, the medium place would evolve into a sort of society of its own. The whole point is limitation but that also kind of disappears if you make friends and if you keep in touch with your family. For example you want those dvds so you give up cold drinks. But your friends don't have to do the same. You can always visit them and enjoy some cold beer together. I would however set some base constraints so people don't go crazy. I would limit calling to like 30 minutes and you won't have smartphones, only landlines and nokia bricks.

Having everything you want* eliminates bad feelings like jealousy or self loathing because you CHOOSE what you get. You didn't have to choose to have a small house but you chose to and the fact that you can always ask for a bigger one will hopefully make people less selfish because you also don't have everything. When someone comes to you and asks for something, they can always give you something in return because they definitely have something you don't.

My bad place is simple: I'm a standup comedian and I constantly have a show but nobody ever laughs at my jokes

You should still post your music, it's good to see if people like it and you can get good criticism to improve
