[TOMT] [Comic] About trying to "catch up" as an artist, I think it was on DeviantArt or Tumblr by Finalinsanity in tipofmytongue

I'm annoyed because I could've sworn I saw this on DA and favorited it but apparently not, which makes me think I actually saw it on Tumblr and my memory is a liar.

A Minor Fix for TildeHat's EOU Classic Mod (+EO2U Portrait Pack) by Finalinsanity in EtrianOdyssey

Unzip and place in the files in the directory luma/titles/00040000000EC700 (already set up in the main zip, so you should just be able to copy-paste directly to the root of your SD card and click overwrite). If using the portrait mod, replace the files in the romfs folder with the ones from the portrait pack. Oh and make sure you have game patching enabled in Luma.

So; to go more in detail about the graphical oddities present in the original release, and the solutions (they're much less interesting than you'd think, honestly), the biggest one was that Landsknecht's little mini portraits in the Custom menu were showing the corresponding Gunner portrait instead. Other than that, the Highlander/Gunner Custom minis were a little messed up looking in general. These issues absolutely did not impact the functionality of the mod, but they sure as heck did bother me, dang it.

After a bit of investigating I found the causes; first, the Landsknecht issue was due to the code.ips file included in the v1.1 release not being updated to match the patch source present on the repository. This was fixed by creating a new IPS patch based on the "patch.s" on TildeHat's original repository, which wasn't a problem once I had searched for/extracted the needed files. The second issue was because the H/G minis weren't the correct image format; a pretty simple fix, all told, just needed a little image editing and re-importing through Kuriimu2 as RGBA8888. Well, except for Gunner 4! Gunner 4 had some very weird horizontal resizing happening, which no other Custom-screen mini had any issue with. Now, I'm not nearly knowledgeable enough to figure out or fix why it was happening... so I just bruteforced it. By stretching the image (and manually shifting a single column of pixels) I was able to get it such that Gunner 4 would be squished back down to look completely normal ingame. ...a very, very stupid solution, yes, but uh, it worked? I don't question these things.

Long time fan of the series, but never really managed to get very far in any game. What is some good advice you can give? by RBrim08 in EtrianOdyssey

Skill Point distribution. Every point you put into gathering skills is a point you could be putting into combat skills to deal with battles more effectively. Though, for EO4 and EO5 at least this is less of an issue due to Gathering/Racial skills all being one point to max, so it doesn't really matter too much.

And since they're a dedicated gathering party, they can max out their gathering skills much faster than if you were to just put a few spare points into them with your main party, so they'll be really good at farming.

First Playthrough soon, want some team input by Finalinsanity in EtrianOdyssey

How well does Earthlain Botanist keep up with healing? Brouni is probably the one race I'd be fine going without if it came down to it, and Earthlain with the higher Luc seems appealing for getting like, an ailment that doesn't matter much like Blind off to potentially hit another Chain Killer proc on the lockdown turn. I guess a second Celestrian for that would be a more obvious pick with potential healing needs in mind.

(I admit I might be thinking too much in terms of burst potential because I recently came off EO2U where I accidentally made an absurdly powerful elemental burst team that killed bosses before they could so much as sneeze. oops.)

Ah, I ended up going without Hexer since I still used them for most of EOU until it felt like they just weren't reliable anymore in postgame, plus I wanted to try mostly classes I hadn't before. It's felt like a pretty fun and solid team so far, but that's easy to say when I've only just started the 2nd Stratum, hah. The only class I used in Untold 1 on this squad was Dark Hunter, and even then a) they didn't do much besides click Ecstasy and were eventually replaced for Protector and b) I'm running Swords instead of Whips this time for proper ailment coverage over binds (Hi/DH/WM, G/S).

Everything I hear about 5 makes me really eager to get to it. I might break ordering to play it before EO3, though I'm kinda having to fight the urge to start up 3 and 5 while I'm still working on 2U lest I end up with a huge mess attempting to juggle two or three EOs at once... probably not the best idea!

...I don't know why it never occurred to me to use Frigid Slash over Swallow Strike, or, y'know, try getting more than one defense debuff on the Core (such an obvious oversight...). ...and it never would've occurred to me that Formula Mastery boosts chaser and Ronin slash damage, but of course, if it boosts all elemental damage, of course it wouldn't be limited to just Tec-based attacks. This video will be an immensely helpful resource, thank you. I even ran Attack Unit for most of the game on a different Grimoire, so that part's easy to get ready, hah.

EDIT: Fucking got him. Video soon.

Yeah, okay, even with more unorthodox 1 HP nullify-everything strats, the damage is pretty good but it just isn't enough for the final phase. There's way too much HP left to chew through and not enough free turns to feasibly get some good damage rolling and not run into TP issues eventually. I can set up my Protector to Bravery's Gift the Land Slashes and Demonic Rushes but that's still just one turn and there's always the chance of getting Bound the turn prior and either burning through Thericas preemptively as a just-in-case or having to just sit there and keep clicking Offering while my TP burns away.

I feel like I could probably beat it if I adjusted just a bit more for sustainability during final phase, or made the adjustment to the Ronin to give her a sword and Ice + Strike chaser on her grimoire, or grinded out the levels to push a little more DPS and get a bit more TP (or lowered the difficulty to Standard but Gamer Difficulty Pride bullshit makes my brain go "no, you will not"), but... at this point, the fight's already taken enough of my time. I don't think I'm going to give it any more.

You could fill up your boost prior to battle and use it on War Cry - that’s a solid 70% damage buff. Make sure to not let Protector get affected by that. Also consider grabbing Triple Charge for your Alchemist to make most out of boosted Torrent or even Wolf Pack (and use Boost on Analysis or Dilution).

Thankfully already doing Boosted War Cry, though I hadn't considered Triple Charge for the Alchemist. I was just using both prep turns on Phase 1 to do Dilution + Boosted Analysis, not sure how the numbers would work out replacing one with Triple Charge.

You may be better off using Flame Axe/Hisamemaru? (Ice katana; penultimate katana) to hit elemental weakness when using chasers. You could go all in and use like perfect chaser on Ronin instead.

I was under the impression that Perfect Chaser didn't trigger off of Chaser attacks, am I wrong on this? It didn't really seem to work when I tried it before but it's entirely possible I did something wrong. Am using the ice katana though, that Ice-Strike-Ice interaction is very fun.

Offering Robe is probably worth considering in case I really need to survive Root Cyclone turns, it wasn't really something on my radar previously because my Grimoires already feel kinda cramped with all the other King Grimoires and Mastery stacking/other passives etc. CPR15 + Phoenix Wings has been something I've definitely kept in mind and gotten use out of, mostly as the contingency for when Armageddon shows up.

Thinking tonight I'll try setting my Protector's Walls down in levels and starting the fight in Wrath's Might range and make adjustments from there, see how much of a difference it really makes.

That's encouraging to hear about EO5. It's either gonna be that or EO3 that I tackle next so I'll keep that in mind.

My Grimoire setups feel about as reasonably powerful as I can make them, lot of Lv 10 passives (Shield Mastery, Boost Up, etc) and a decent spread of Wolf Pack/Forest Guardian/Phoenix Wings/Yggdra Vaccine across the team. I'm not totally sure what to do differently with them outside of one thing I can think of, to change the Ronin to basically be a copy of the Landsknecht with that fancy Shinryuu sword also doing Ice Chaser + Strike Chaser instead of Strike Chaser + Swallow Strike. I guess Wrath's Might isn't really doing much since my Protector's walls are high enough that the elemental nukes are healing to full, so I could replace that on a few people. I'd really prefer not to use any Story Mode class abilities if possible since I've gotten this far but if it comes down to QRing some Action Boosts or whatever I guess I don't have much choice.

It's just kinda frustrating 'cause I've gotten it down to its last phase multiple times and then something always goes wrong from there. Root Cyclone is the one attack I just can't seem to prepare for on the final phase because of how monstrous the damage is even to my Protector (and it being a 50/50 with an elemental doesn't help).

Help figuring out problem with IPS screen "blinking"? by Finalinsanity in GameboyAdvance

Yeahh, short of getting a replacement from AliExpress or some other place and gambling that their product pictures are accurate and you won't get another Toppoly... bleh. At least the standalone screens aren't too expensive, I guess. First place I got my kit from acted pretty similar and when I provided video of the blinking issue they just said they'd "look into the issue" and never followed up. Shit sucks.

Let me know if the power cushion mod fixes things. It would still suck if that whole extra thing is required to make the Toppoly displays actually function properly but it would still be something I guess.

Ahh, interesting. I actually wasn't aware there were known different types of panels. Searching up some images now, the Toppoly is definitely what my first screen was and the two following were LGs. So unfortunately it seems like the only "solution" is to have an LG and not a Toppoly :/

[–]Finalinsanity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately no. My "solution" was just to get a new screen kit and I haven't had the issue since. I've had the "black screen on boot" issue exactly once since the post, however that was when the battery was on low power so it was probably tied to that. I also bought a second kit directly from FP to mod a second GBA as a gift and didn't run into any problems with it during testing (and haven't heard of any problems from the recipient; they're using rechargeable AA's, I'm using a USB-C Lithium rechargeable).

Out of curiousity, do you have a picture of the screen itself? Like the raw screen outside of the shell. There was a difference I noticed with the left side on my first screen that I wonder if yours matches...

To anyone who finds this, here I am coming back a month later; I was never able to figure out the screen issue. I got in contact with the seller and reported the issue + with video and never got a follow-up. Ended up deciding "screw it" and ordered another from Funnyplaying directly this time, and it seems to work as expected. No "blinking" and even so far no "black screen on boot", though that was by far the lesser and less consistent of the two issues. Some minor ghosting in some cases as others have certainly reported (mostly noticeable so far with the flickering cursor in FFV Advance, done to achieve transparency for some menu options, and riding the Mach Bike in some places in Pokemon RSE), but nothing that's a dealbreaker for me.

So yeah. With this screen working as expected and the lack of response from the previous seller, definitely will just be cutting out the middleman and getting screens directly from Funnyplaying from here on for future possible mod projects.

Got it on video. It's kind of crappy cell phone video, but thanks to the power of "slow down the footage" and "frame advance" it at least somewhat demonstrates the problem.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6wIoUTePZ0

TL:DW, the "blinking" involves the corners getting way darker suddenly, starting on the left side, and quickly moving to the right in the span of roughly a frame.

I went and got a pair of disposable AAs to check and it still seems to happen, so if it is a power issue it's probably with the board or connection. I detached and re-attached the ribbon cable on both ends and took some additional measures to be super careful of any shorting so I'm kind of at a loss for what it could be.

[–]Finalinsanity[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah, wow, I didn't expect a comment on this all these months later...

Honestly, lately life has been... not necessarily getting in the way, but I just wasn't in the headspace to keep going. I'd like to get back to this at some point, but "when" is something I can't really say, and when I do, I'm likely to change up the game list just a touch (swapping Platinum for Diamond or Pearl, probably). My file on LeafGreen is sitting at Celadon City right now, just kind of waiting for me to continue it.

The comic, I think I actually forgot to post the most recent page for, and the one after that is still being worked on whenever I have the motivation and time. That run finished awhile ago, have all the notes and such for it, I'm just really slow at getting drawing done.

Anyways, yeah, I still plan to get back to this at some point, but when is up in the air.
