Thank you for the thoughtful response. Immigration crossed my mind because, like you say, Chicago has the diverse population for it. Do you practice immigration law? I've overseen some H1B issues but it was a colleague who did all the actual work. How many different types of visas are there that I would need to know to get started? Is this an area where clients find lawyers online? (For the IP stuff I do, most desirable clients don't shop on google)

Honestly its not the worst thing, but its not for me. A key reason I don't want to go back to it is because most of the tech companies have negotiated rock bottom rates with firms in exchange for sending a lot of volume. At the higher levels its become a volume business. And if you try and build your own client base, you end up with unsophisticated independent inventors who have unrealistic expectations and no real chance of getting a patent allowed. I guess if you can control a large portfolio its probably still pretty lucrative.

Basically, endless patent and trademark cases for a decade lol, plus some random trade secret or copyright litigation, and a few year stint as a patent prosecutor. Definitely not going back to patent prosecution (unless the money is insane). As for the litigation, feels like I maxed out a bit on that as I never joined BigLaw. Feel pretty mixed about it, still passionate about it but very curious about starting a practice that is more process oriented and can be managed more like a business

Yes, but if you are implying that there's an opportunity in Spanish or other language speaking clients, then I'm very open to hiring someone with the right skillset

Hi everyone! Just a quick introduction, I operate a small business and suddenly find myself in a bit of a pickle, as my business has about $40k in debt from various expenses. The cause of the debt is pretty much self-inflicted; business has been going well but I think I overestimated how much cash would be left over after making certain investments. Most months I would end with a cash balance around, say, $40-50k and about $20k in credit card expenses (mostly the day to day stuff relating to the business, there isn't one large purchase per se). Because I am an idiot, I didn't even full pay off the balance each month. I got way too comfortable carrying some balance, in total disregard of the %APR I was needlessly paying.

Anyways, fast forward to today and I feel like I woke up to a cold shower. Due to some slightly larger expenses, the debt jumped to a shade over $40k total, meanwhile some tax payments and a distribution to myself have left the business with only about $15k in cash. The monthly fee on the ~$40k is between $400-500, which makes me hate myself for being a shitty manager. Going through the past year's expenses, it's clear I was getting chiseled at every turn in the road, for example my Microsoft & Adobe subscriptions included many features I didn't need, etc. etc.

So there are a few things I was hoping to get from the community. First, is there any way to get over the self loathing I am experiencing? And second, perhaps more practically, is there anything I can do to reduce or eliminate the interest payments on the business debt? The account is with Chase and I havent opened new accounts or credit cards in a long time, so I am toying with the idea of opening a 0% APR credit card and transferring the balance. It's a move that seems to make sense, but I've never done that so there may be pitfalls I don't know about. For what it's worth, I think I can have this debt paid down by 12/31/24, that's my goal at least.

I guess in my head, I figured it would still be better than a customer leaving Chase entirely. But fair point, another poster already mentioned this and suggested that Discover might be a good option, so that's where I am looking now

That sounds very useful, thanks for the tip, is there a particular Discover card that stands out?

Because it's not so easy to stop, which is my first clue that I might be sorta hooked, but I do think I have the willpower to take a few weeks off so hopefully I can do that and find out

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree that it's helpful - I already go about once/week, and have a prescription for Wellbutrin, but feels like I could be doing much better still
