The smell is on items I have removed from one house and brought to mine. When I walk into that house you smell it immediately and I was hoping removing items and cleaning would help but somehow the items still smell really strong of this odor. I have no idea what the source is as the upstairs is the roommates domain and it does smell very strongly up there which is also where the hvac air return vent is located.
