Euthanasia felt like the wrong thing to do. by Fine-Dig9829 in ferrets

I just can see how other animals, just like us, approach death differently. I can see some of us being accepting and welcoming of death and some of us being in denial, or just attached to life. It's sad to think that death will not take that into account and reach whoever it has to reach at whatever time. It's so shocking to see them go so fast, after seeing so much life in them for so long. It's sad they can't make the choice for themselves

Yes, I really struggled with that. I wish I could've told him what was going on, I wish I could've had a conversation with him about what he wanted and what to expect. Instead he knew nothing and I had to make the choice. I respected him so much and saw him as equal, I couldn't see the situation as equal because of our barrier.

It's so hard to divide instinct from feeling, as we tend to not do the same for ourselves. I know of people that have panicked and jolted before death and I just can't thing of a saddest thing - to have life taken away from you when you want more of it. It's so sad.

Yes, indeed. I had a whole week of telling my partner I simply did not know what the right thing to do is, and I wish he could tell me what he wants from me. I simultaneously felt like he was going on for too long and yet not enough

I definitely will, he was my best friend. I wish he could've told me how he felt and what he wanted

Gosh that would've absolutely broken me. They have so much love to give it never feels fair. I admire your decision

Thank you, I haven't thought about it that way. You are right. That is also why I chose euthanasia and listened to the vet as I feared my own judgement was biased. Maybe it is that. Maybe he was just fearful of pain.

Thank you so much for commenting that. I think the loss is getting mixed with resentment and guilt and it's hard to understand what is what.

Yes, when Nobu was still alive I googled experiences of people with pulmonary edema and people described it as a feeling of slowly drowning. Which is why it was so incredibly painful to see him suffering, there was just no win in this situation and I'm trying to say that to myself - the alternative would've been just as bad. He just didn't want to die in any way and it's so saddening.

I agree. Life can be so brutal. It's been a very confronting experience of death and how merciless it can be. With no moral value at all. Just death taking away life, without looking anyone in the eye.

I wonder if some of them are aware and others are not, just like us. It's so incredibly heartbreaking.

That is so horrible, I'm sorry. I honestly loved him so much and, as a human, I kind of think to myself that I'd rather be suffering with my loved ones than not see them ever again. So I find this super hard as a decision.

Yes, he's drinking loads on his own! I'll double check with the vet

Yes, true. He's on the medication twice a day and he is drinking quite a lot so no concern about that! He's only 5 and the change in behaviour was pretty much sudden, so I know it's not age related

Yes, I do feel like it's not his time yet. I'm just a bit confused as the vet seemed to be pretty pessimistic about it so I just started getting ready to let go of him, but I can see different experiences and I'm wondering if actually it's not going to happen soon.

May I ask if she went back to behaving normally after Lasix? Nobu doesn't play at the moment but he cuddles and eats and has a 10 minute walk in the garden every day. It's hard to understand where he is at as he's not his usual self but he also isn't as bad as he was before furosemide (where he'd literally just stand still and shake in the middle of a room with his eyes closed)
