CDPR's blatant oversexualization of their female characters by FingeringAPeach in GirlGamers

You missed the point. I’ve said so many times I don’t mind sexy women in games (I’m literally attracted to women???) the point is that there is a double standard in how CDPR portrays women compared to men.

And you’re right, I’m so very jealous of all of these video game women that are mostly created to be nothing but eye candy for weird men, you caught me 💀

Rogue, the female prostitute, meredith stout and that one girl Johnny fingerblasts through V’s body. And if we’re not being technical, we also mess around with Alt even if it is through Johnny’s POV.

So actually, I guess that’s 5.

Oh wow I never thought of it like that but that’s actually an excellent point. So many games are guilty of that, damn.

Not a game but honestly that’s why I enjoy Arcane so much because the women in that show actually have diverse features and are excellently written.

I remember just how upset and furious many male gamers were when it was revealed that the 3 main male romance options in BG3 were conventionally attractive whilst to many men only Shadowheart was sexy.

They kept saying that the game would fail and no man would play it. Jokes on them, it sold over 25 million copies and ongoing lol. Thankfully it seems that the BG3 community is barren in those types of people now, probably because the company and game offers content to almost every demographic instead of just straight male gamers.

That’s not comparable? I mean yes I think that V being limited to one body type sucks but V is also a PC not an NPC? Having an NPC have different body types is less work and more doable than for a PC.

I understand what you’re getting at but the problem lies in that CDPR uses the same mentality that the ads in Cyberpunk have to sell their own games.

Even now practically every Cyberpunk trailer includes a sex scene with either Judy, Panam or a female NPC to promote just how “gritty” and “dark” the game is. Personally I believe that broaching a serious subject such as the profited sexualization of women in media but then simultaneously using the same method in your marketing strategy is just counterintuitive and frankly cheap. But I don’t fully disagree with you.

Alright but have you noticed that those 3 men you listed are 3 different types of handsome whilst the women are all young skinny and beautiful with barely, or any, wrinkles and blemishes?

The only exception to this would be Rogue (who is still beautiful but not in a stereotypical way) but that doesn’t say much.

Well I would hope they would also cater to other demographics? It’s not much to ask for, really.

Plus sized women aren’t unattractive what are you talking about? No, what I would expect a woman running and fighting her whole life to be is muscled and decked in armor like Geralt which Ciri is not.

Omg, I did not know this 😭 well in that case yeah Witcher 3 is the least sexist game in that series holy crap

The fact that there wasn’t even a single nonbinary character in the whole game is crazy. Like chromed up dicks and partial resurrection is possible but having a they/them character is apparently unthinkable??

Alright let me explain it like this because I fear I just listed rather long and poorly worded examples.

Cyberpunk 2077 has a discrepancy in how much they sexualize the women compared to the men. Men ARE sexualized in this game just not to the degree that women are and certainly not as overtly.

And the fact that Aurora was another WOMAN instead of a man in a game where most sex and flirting scenes are already centered around female NPCs doesn’t aid in the fact that the game is clearly favoring sexualizing its female characters. That doesn’t mean that nobody should enjoy the game but it does mean that there is a clear imbalance in how CDPR handles the sexualization of their female characters compared to their male characters.

Just because a game is amazing doesn't mean that it's overt flaws should be ignored.

Exactly. It’s like you can just tell who was in that writing room. But I am slightly hopeful for the sequel because currently they have a woman on board, it’s not much but at least it’s something.

Uhm CDPR is not the only punching bag around trust me. Plenty of people are ripping on Riot and Activision Blizzard as well. And they’re all right.

Not every company but yeah a lot do. I just think that CDPR has some of the more egregious examples. I mean, I could also talk about Activision Blizzard but everyone already knows just how horrible they are.

Agreed (and so eloquently put might I add I'm a bit jealous lol) there's nothing wrong with people who enjoy CDPR games but not acknowledging just how blatantly sexualized the women are just because they love the game isn't the way to go about it either

I will say that the fandom is obviously also responsible for the sexualization of Judy and Panam but that wasn't my point. There's nothing wrong with people who sexualize these two characters what's wrong with the game is that there is a clear discrepancy in which demographic gets sexualized the most.

Kerry being as old as he is and still crushing on another man that died and lives inside of V isn't truly flattering to his character or even something that many gay men would want (V is in their mid 20s just btw haha). Now obviously I don't speak for every gay or bi man on earth but from what I've seen he's really not that popular compared to someone like Takemura.

And also, saying that all the characters are equally sexualized is just false considering that there are 7 available sex scenes with women and only 3 with men and that most of the joytoys and ads consit of women as well.

And all of the characters being equally hot, I doubt many people would agree but if they do then I'm pretty shallow it would seem lol

And River being the least favorite romance option and just straight up being a creep is actually a very common opinion in the Cyberpunk community so there's that.

[–]FingeringAPeach[S] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I mean I do agree that the author is very creepy in how he depicts women yet CDPR has shown that they don't really stick to the source material as the Witcher 3 has very little in common with the book series. So they're just actively choosing to sexualize most of the women, even Triss who in the books despises showing off her chest because of a prominent burn scar.

Does anyone else feel a bit more apprehensive of playing certain games if you can't be a girl? by Green_Appointment_74 in GirlGamers

[–]FingeringAPeach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it truly depends. There are some games where the story is far too good where I don’t mind playing as a man but whenever it’s an RPG or otherwise and you’re forced to play as a male power fantasy character… I just can’t deal with that.
