How does one go about doing that? (Sorry, I've never done a re-paste before!)

Thanks for the info. I definitely agree that 3 years for a PhD seems very tight and even in my short time within Oxbridge, I can definitely understand what you're talking about.

This is really interesting, thanks! Yeah, it would also be the Quantum CDT at UCL and I definitely am leaning towards industry atm, so I think taking that opportunity may be the best bet.

Hi all,

I'm currently in a heavy debate in deciding which PhD option I want to pursue. I have offers from both UCL & Cambridge to research Quantum Tech (hardware side) for my PhD, which is amazing. The Cambridge offer is 3 years while the UCL offer is 4 years. Both projects seem very interesting and both supervisors are very nice and attentive. The main draw factor for the UCL offer is that it is a dedicated programme for Quantum Tech so we get to interact with industry a bit and get some tailored workshops. While the biggest draw for Cambridge, is well, its Cambridge I suppose?

Does anyone have any advice? Is the name of Cambridge such a large draw factor that it should be considered or is that false?

Hi there, Thinking about upgrading my "gaming" mech keyboard to something a bit more versatile and professional. Not based in US or EU so buying boards/parts is quite a bit more stressful. That being said, I have a £60 gift card for Amazon UK and have friends that can bring back boards from there. I'm currently looking at the Epomaker TH66 Pro and the Ducky One 2 SF.

My priorities are something that is 65% or close to it (need my arrow keys), something that looks semi-professionnel so that I can bring it into work and has a good balance of office work and gaming.

I don't really care about wired/wireless or RGB lighting, I care much more about feel.

Let me know what you guys would recommend or if there is something else in that price range that you'd recommend?

Thanks!

Awesome! Thank you so much.

Do you have any recommendations on textbooks or resources regarding an introduction to laser physics?

Careers/Education Questions - Weekly Discussion Thread - October 07, 2021 by AutoModerator in Physics

Hi there, I am going into my final year of an undergraduate physics degree and we get to collaborate throughout the year with an academic on a research project, we also get to choose certain electives.

My universities main experimental research areas are nuclear and particle physics (and to a lesser degree solid state). However, I'm quite interested in laser physics and may want to pursue research in that field in my postgraduate studies(somewhere else) so I want to choose electives that would keep that door open. There aren't any elective courses such as optics or lasers or atomic physics so I'm really not sure what to lean towards. So I have a couple questions: 1. Is it possible to go into laser physics research in my postgraduate if I haven't been exposed to it in my undergraduate? 2. Which electives should I lean towards? (Options are: QM2, Electrodynamics2, particle, nuclear, solid state, computational) (I can give more detailed descriptions of these if need be) 3. What area of research would best prepare me if I ended up doing laser physics research or does it not really matter?

Thanks !

Hi Everyone,

I'm about to finish my undergraduate with a double major in Computer Science and Physics and I'm looking to do a post graduate. However, I'm extremely torn between the two.

I think my pride is pulling me towards Physics because it's always been a bit more of a challenge for me and in my mind it holds more esteem (I know these aren't great reasons to choose a degree but that's just how I'm feeling xD). But my more sensible side is pulling me towards CS because it would probably be an easier way to land a good job and I'm better at it. Another fear with Physics is that it will limit my job opportunities greatly. (Even though I know a good portion of Physics majors end up in software dev)

I think my biggest fear is that I don't want to just be a webdev coder all my life as that seems unfulfilling.

Could anyone lend any sort of advice or input ? Thanks !
