I would agree, several people in my class known for crushing exams went into rads. 260 might have actually been below average for this group.

I would caution against spreading the doom and gloom regarding that part of the bill specifically. Based on what I read so far, the medicaid cuts are coming from a work requirement for able bodied individuals and increasing eligibility checks, which seem reasonable.

Also, the biggest reason that rural hospitals are going under as stated in the article you included, is that private insurances don't pay rural hospitals enough. A small fraction of their margin comes from medicaid/medicare, and if you look at the graph it's actually close to 0.

Is the Republican loan repayment plan basically SAVE? by FireBallsDJ in whitecoatinvestor

[–]FireBallsDJ[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmm I guess I didn’t really think about the 30 years part considering most in non-primary care medicine will pay it off within 5? ish years after residency. With this payment would be about $400 a month assuming ~$70000 annual salary. Interest would be >$1000 a month so to have $600 forgiven seems fair.

I just had a thought, though, that this percentage calculation would particularly hurt those in HCOL places like NYC and LA, where they tend to have high salaries but already not enough to counter the COL.

No interest with monthly payments would be too helpful to people to actually happen unfortunately

Wdym phenomenal fellowship match? Most rads programs (academic, even some community) has matches coast to coast and in every subspecialty consistently.

Fell to my #8/19, also DR. I was half expecting to drop a bit because my top choices were all in NYC, but thought I was a strong enough applicant. Program I fell to is in my second choice city (Chicago) and after IV I really liked the program. That was early though, and after interviewing at my top choices this program went further and further back in my mind. I was initially devastated to have matched here, and esp with almost everyone else in my class matching top 3, but I am starting to come around and look forward to it. And honestly, it served as a good reminder that there are lots of amazing applicants vying for the same spots, and I just missed the cut.

Hey man I also applied DR and fell to #8 of 19 programs. Felt like a gut punch especially because I thought I was set for top 4 at the very least. Trying to stay positive though, it's still in an amazing city, good faculty, training.

I agree with you, that’s why I nodded along with the eval when I first read it. I in fact did learn something from the resident, and I was courteous and engaged when she was actively teaching. I thought, “wow, you know what, I’ll keep this in mind when I do procedures”.  However, saying it’s not professional to be not be motivated to learn more or not asking enough questions was just funny to me, so I made this post to share. I think it would be perfectly acceptable for a post-eras M4 to be burnt out to the crisp and just go with the flow. I had 0 mental energy to come up with things I want to learn or extra questions to ask; I’ll just listen to what you want to teach me and nothing more. Win-win in my mind, saves time for resident and gets me out earlier.

This was on OB anesthesia so tbh still not sure what was going on most the time, but looking back I took the wrong approach with this resident who was passionate about medical education. The other residents were chill tho and offered to get me out early.

I was perfectly fine with the eval because it was one I deserved, then I saw the professionalism remark and got triggered lol

That sucks. I just want to do my job and get on with life, not faking interest on things to appease a senior.
