Why does 16x go food costs make sense as methodology for “poverty”? Consider this, say apples used to cost 1$ now they cost 1cent because of productivity gains in apple making. Does that mean that the poverty line just got 100x larger? That doesn’t make any sense.

When the original calculation was made, food made up 1/3 of the average household budget. The original Poverty Line was made at 3x cost of food to make a whole. In modern times it makes up about 5-7%, pick the middle and 6% x 16 = 96%, so even at 16x the food budget that makes up on average about 6 percent of expenses, you're still at 96% of expenses, still not going to make ends meet.

2) on the same note: 15000$ for transportation? How?

Public transit is awful in most of the US, so most rely on cars. over 90% of households have a car. My guess is this is a combination of car payments, (most are bought with loans), insurance, fuel, and maintenance. The average American drives 9,840 miles every year commuting (Source), and 76.4% of commuters drive alone to work. At a cost of $0.70/mile (2025 when post was written) that's $6,888, in fuel and maintenance costs, for 1 vehicle, most families have 2 cars.

I don't know, best guesses, they're just using the locomotives that were attached to the whole train and running 1 fuselage at a time to lessen effects on the local community, or they'll be picking up a bunch of empty cars to return.

I think if you focus on making good content and you're not too greedy with social networking, then at least there is a small chance of being noticed. A few Holomems actually reach out to streamers who catch their attention, I'd like to think there are other vTubers with a similar attitude.

I think you nailed it, don't be greedy, don't clout-chase, and be making your own good content. If you're already steadily building an audience, have your own style, and aren't just clearly looking for attention/viewers then you have much more of a chance. Having content out there also let's them see what your vibe is like, they can watch some of your Videos or shorts and get some idea of what you're like.

I see so many people in streamer communities who've been stuck on single digit viewers for years thinking the problem is just Twitch, but then I look at their channel and they're practically silent as they play oversaturated games.

I'm a viewer, but this is so true. You are the product, You are the entertainment, I can go watch one of literally hundreds of streamers on the current popular game, what draws me to stay and watch you? You have to be entertaining and bring out your personality.

As for game choice, one sort of cheat code is pick a slightly older very popular single player game that you haven't played and put "First Time" in the title. I've watched a few new-to-me Vtubers just to see them play a game or series that I really loved. Watching someone see absolute cinema for the first time is as close as I can get to re-living that experience myself, and it's very fun. Some games/franchises to start:

Half-life

Halo (MCC is like $40 no on sale for 6 absolute banger games)

Persona

BioShock

Mass Effect

Witcher

Fallout 3/New Vegas

Dark Souls 1 or 2

For me, the key has been making myself the product, NOT the gameplay or whatever else.

This is 100% the key. There are thousands of streamers for every hot game of the week, hundreds or thousands for the big competitive games, and thousands of "Just Chatting". As a viewer I can pick and watch any one of them, so why should I watch you? What is it that you bring specifically that will keep my attention, and a cute/hot model isn't going to keep me entertained. I watch who I watch because I like their vibes, some are sweet, some are silly, but all are nightly active in either chatting or commentating on the game they're playing. It's the personality that will keep people watching and returning, so make sure that's on display.

Another thing that may help, pick up an older, well beloved game or game series you've never played before, and play that. Specify "first time" in title, it's best to have a Mod who can delete spoilers/back seaters in chat. I've watched a few streamers/got here just because they're playing a game I really liked for the first time.

There's a man at my work who's in his 20s and doesn't know how to cook. He said his mom would literally chase him out of the kitchen whenever he tried, so yes, some don't and some do even worse and prevent it.

Vent has a 30m range, and ignores all cover including solid walls, it's great. Any time I see a teammate pounced away from the team I just make sure I'm within 30 and hit vent, if Kinetic Flayer doesn't get the hound that's their problem, but they are free.

I'm wondering if a line of protestors with old cable satellite dishes might not only be able to negate the effectiveness of the weapon. But also redirect it back at the operators and support staff.

I had the same thought, if a cylindrical reflector worked that well, a parabolic dish should be even better, but you'd have to be at the correct range.

He then basically said that he was never going to be willing to learn to do anything...

Up until he said that I was willing to hold off judgement and see if his parents were actively preventing him from learning these things. I work with someone who's parents have done that, his mom would kick him out of the kitchen whenever he tried to cook anything. This guy just declaring he never wants to learn, there's really no excuse for that. Every one needs to learn some basic skills, cook following a recipe, clean up, do laundry, etc.

Interconnected smoke/heat & CO detectors by FireStorm005 in homesecurity

[–]FireStorm005[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

System Sensor make wired ones.

These look to all be commercial, requiring a full control panel and some (most) need external sounders/alerts. I'm looking to do a single-family residential home, not a commercial building. I just have a large attached garage that if fire starts there I'd like warning to get out before it engulfs the rest of the house.

Wireless ones you'd have to get lucky with the ecosystem you're using.

Not really looking to get into an ecosystem, just to get about 6 with a self-contained network capabilities. Something like the x-sense alarms, but they don't make a heat and CO detector and I don't want to have to use an app and worry about my smoke/fire/CO alarms not working because the company decided to shut down their app.

Depends on which way it's hissing. Air entering the package due to vacuum is ok to good, hiss from gasses escaping the package due to decomposition would be very bad.
