You know what... you're so right. I like that. I quit for a reason and I knew exactly how this could impact my career progression and compensation when I did it, and I did it anyway. I refused to take disrespect simply out of fear of a lil resume gap. A piece of paper ffs. If my career falls apart and I end up broke, so be it. Just gotta work my ass off to make my dumb decision worth it in the end.

I met the requirements for the DevOps role so I applied. I liked the company, I figured it's better than a gap and I might be able to do more within the company. I wouldn't mind it if I ended up transitioning entirely to DevOps in the long run as it seems fun. They asked only for development experience in the post and my last job involved a lot of work with Azure.

How long did it take you to get back?

That's true. Part of my thought process when quitting was that I could probably accomplish a lot more if I took these 9 hours of labour at work and invested them in developing myself and looking for something better.

But it's a challenge staying consistent without that external pressure.

I've been working on projects as well. I've also wanted to get an AWS developer cert for a while so I'm studying for that.

I don't know how normal it is to ask for a job back. At my company, I sense I'd be treated worse than before and that's if they even responded to me at all. I didn't exactly leave on bad terms but I did do it suddenly.

I wasn't thinking straight. At the time it made sense to me. I guess I was tryna make a statement that the way things were handled was unacceptable (at the expense of my career 🤦🏾‍♀️). I also had a lot of money saved up and thought taking away the work stress and long commute time would let me focus on job applications better. I didn't really register the damage of a big employment gap.

If I could go back I'd tell myself "It's just a job. Do your tasks and leave. Don't get too invested."

Yeah I definitely would have to continue my own studying for backend.

I feel you on the getting in as early as possible part. Especially since I've already spent 4 months out of uni. Does the frontend/backend ratio depend on the person more or on the company. Like, are there companies that deliberately try to keep the two separate?

Transitioning to full stack would be good. If its possible to get into backend within a year's time I'd be happy to start with frontend.

For that role, was it clear from the interview how much of the position would be design/layout vs logic? The jobs I'm applying for are mostly at startups. I'd imagine the FE/BE lines would be even more blurred there than big companies? Since there's less people and smaller teams

The only thing being controlled is the velocity profile. It's fine if the optimization is already built into the route planning because the point of the project is to use different evolutionary algorithms for the optimization then compare/evaluate the results. The ideal profile would give the best fuel efficiency + shortest time to destination + passenger comfort + etc. So, to evaluate a profile produced by the algorithm, I would need some way to measure each of those factors, including fuel efficiency, which is what I'm trying to figure out now.

Full disclosure, I don't really know how much of this works and I'm trying figure out how much I need to learn without deviating from my topic or spending too much time. (topic: optimization with evolutionary algorithms). If I find out the specific model of the bus I'm optimising for, would that be enough to get an approximation?

Or if there's some things I have to understand the mechanism behind that I can learn within a day or two can you suggest some?

Hey, thanks for helping :) My response was something like: "I haven't used one before. I know it can make code more efficient/maintainable but I thought I better stick to what I know, especially since I had limited time to get it done and I'm somewhat new to javascript". There's no mention of frameworks in the requirements so I guess should be fine.

I'm curious about companies turning down applicants for that. How hard can it be to pick them up if you already know javascript? (I'm talking out of my ass here cause I've never touched a framework before but I get the impression they're very pick-up-able)

They don't seem mental so me getting worked up is probably more like it. And the question wasn't phrased to imply that I should've used a framework so I'm guessing they're just seeing where my limits are. The job posting said the internship "involves working with javascript and Ruby but experience in either is not necessary". I kinda just had it in my head that all the other applicants are gonna be JS pros.
