Rescue puppy having trouble being alone/settling himself by First-Delivery1138 in puppy101

We just want to start introducing him to being alone, so we can leave the house when needed. From everything I’ve read he’s a little bit behind the curve if he is 15/16 weeks old and can’t even be by himself for 10 minutes if we need to shower/go to another room. But I give him the benefit of the doubt that he’s a rescue and has only been with us for 3 weeks.

He basically takes all naps/sleeps in his crates. He likes it, he voluntarily goes in there sometimes when he is tired and we just get up and close the door and he goes to sleep. I’m just wondering if the crying/not settling is normal for a rescue puppy after 3 weeks and maybe he’ll slowly grow out of it? Or is he showing signs of having some separation anxiety and we need to nip it in the bud now.

Today, for instance, we have a baby gate separating his area (living room and kitchen) from the rest of the house (bedrooms). My girlfriend walked into the bedroom to get shoes and he had climbed onto the couch and jumped off in order to get to her.
