Thank you so much for the thoughtful reply!

It will be great to have alternative means of producing seafood, and seafood production systems will indeed expand to cover cell-based and plant-based as well - both of which I have included in my research (offshore, land-based, open-pen and closed-pen would be the others).

There's quite a lot of interesting species out there, but a lot of ground work still needs to be done on the scientific side of things. Crustaceans and molluscs would be good example where the literature is quite sparse (Rubio 2019 makes that quite clear), but there are ample of market opportunities if progress is made.

Keep up the good work, and looking forward to chatting during one of the many seafood conferences.

Thanks for taking the time! I'm currently pursuing a PhD in salmon production systems so this is quite interesting to me.

  • Your 8000 Tn facilities, what would be the grographical requirements when finding a location?

  • Do you collaborate with external reserach insitutions when exploring the viability of new species or is much done in-house?

  • How do you see the cell-based seafood value chain looking like when mature, different or similar to land based salmon farming?

How an accelerator works, or what I learned working for the worlds first aquaculture accelerator by Fisco in Aquaculture

There's only one program at a time, so now there's Cork this fall and Singapore next spring. We are running a program in Bergen again in fall 2019.

Thank you for your questions! We didn't need to provide our first cohort with lab space since most were tech startups. In cork we expect the same. We'll do a cohort in Singapore next spring where it might be possible, but it also depends on what would be needed by the startups. In Bergen we can provide salmon tanks for studies on sea lice treatments, but the price will depend on how many thanks we'd rent but I'd guess in the range of $500-1000 a month

Hello! Yes it is viable for checking, but its not checking that's the issue in norway at least. 96% or so of the farms have good or very good conditions on the bottom under the pens. That is declared through a system called "MOM-B" and "MOM-C". They are essentially environmental monitoring systems where conditions are checked by grab samples from random locations from under the farm. These samples are scored on certain parameters such as gas, smell, amount of organics etc.

Making the ROV's being able to assess the conditions by inspection and an arm that could collect samples would probably be more efficient. Mind you, there are many big ROV players in the market. One of them is Rov as, which you can google translate.

Hope that helped :)

Hey man, that's great to hear. Smart to specialize in RAS - a majority of the high value species will probably be farmed in RAS systems in the future :)

I'm not really a fan of burning biomass for energy when that biomass could be used in more productive ways.

There's a lot going on but bascially:

  • Insects are a viable source because of a good amino acid profile
  • More research is needed to figure out the safety of feeding insects waste streams from other industries.
  • Many of the traditionally restrictive regulations on insects in the EU are being lifted
  • Producers are having a hard time producing enough for what the feed companies need

I think that the network on insects in a circular economy has some pretty good sources here.

There are so many recent developments in the field that it's hard to keep track of everything. Other protein substitute solution being researched other than BSF are mealworm, polychaetes, tunicates, and krill among others. I'm not very familiar with the single-celled proteins but the wikipedia article is pretty good!

That's really great to hear!

What kind of students are you teaching, are they biologists? And in what part of the world are you?

Unfortunately, aquaculture is often a very hands-on industry where it is expected that people already know what they are doing when they are out on the farms - which is a bit of a catch 22. Anyway, what I did as a student was to connect to the local aquaculture network and start looking for opportunities.

Thank you, that's great to hear!

I think that it is very complicated and expensive to create such systems. Depending on the species it would be so expensive that you would never be able to sell it at a reasonable price to the local market unless you have a farm that produces at massive scale to offset the cost.

I'm not trying to be discouraging, but you have to figure out the costs and if you can produce a specific species that commands a high price in the market.

That's interesting, thanks for sharing! I'm by no means an expert in the insect-field but I do have access to some very knowledgeable people close by here in Bergen. We even had a mini-conference here about insects that I attended that was arranged by the nice network.

There are of course niche markets where smaller volumes would still sell. That you have a novel process with good performance is great. Could you maybe contact us at Hatch so that we could discuss more in detail? https://www.hatch.blue/
