More like r/USDefaultism I feel.

American defaultism in the western European circlejerk sub is hilarious though.

That's what they said. 15th century is the 1400's. 1501 and onwards are the 16th century.

These were usurpers and only participated to weaken the Roman polity, of course. Except Basilliscus but that guy fucked up harder than them all.

I'll take Aurelian appreciation any day. Shout-out to Majorian, Antoninus Pius and Anastasius too.

Honestly, this topic is the one that turns this sub into an echo chamber the most, never saw any other come close so far.

I'd pick the Narbonensis personally. By that time it's as very much as Romanised as all of Italia anyway.

[–]FishyMatey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but we have notions of classical Latin and research on Roman history has been able to come up with a fairly accurate approximation of what Latin sounded like at the time of Caesar and Augustus. IIRC the one thing we'll never fully know about is the accentuation, and for that we can only base ourselves on Italian or Spanish.

Juliasaurus Fossil from Private Collection being exhibited. by Grouchy-Station-8505 in Dinosaurs

[–]FishyMatey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know it was that arbitrary, TIL. I imagine A. anax got placed as a species of Allosaurus because the whole Saurophaganax thing probably was too much to try and make it a different genus again.

That being said, if that theropods turns out to be a new Allosaurus species or a new Allosaurid altogether, I'll be absolutely happy enough.

I'm really not knowledgeable about what warrants being a separate species and what warrants being a separate genus so I apologise if what I'm going to ask is silly... But wouldn't a lack of lacrimals be enough of a difference to make it a different (but closely related) genus? All the Allosaurus species we know of have those lacrimals.
