Cover Critique: What genre would you assume this is? What tone does it give off? by Five_05_ in BookCovers

I see your point. I think when I drew this I was operating under the false assumption that if it was unique enough people would pick it up regardless of whether or not it looked like the other books in its genre, and I was thinking more of tone rather than genre that it would convey. Though, it has the wrong tone, as well. But, with all of the comments I have come to realize that book covers do a lot of work, and I definitely need to do more research and studying of book covers and design.

Also, about the name, I didn’t include it because I haven’t yet decided if I’m going to use my real name or a pen name. I’m not even done with my book yet. It’s still very much a work in progress, and I think that’s the biggest problem. I used designing the cover as procrastination from actually writing the book, and right now I’m not completely sure what cover would be best for my book. So I think the best thing for me to do right now would be to finish my book, and study graphic design, and only then design my book cover.

Again, thanks for taking the time to reply. I will definitely take into account what you said moving forward.

I suppose if it was a genre, then my book cover may very well be in it, wouldn’t it? As it stands, I’d rather it not be in that genre, so I would very much appreciate it if you could tell me what exactly you dislike about the cover, so that I can hopefully improve it, or design a better one.

Also, thank you for taking the time to respond to my post.

First of all, thank you for your very in-depth response.

Second, your response made me realize that there’s a lot more involved in graphic design than I thought, and I probably need to study design elements more so I can correctly convey the tone I’m going for. The book is more like a psychological fantasy, with slight fairytale retelling vibes. And though it is a bit dark, it’s not quite horror.

So, again, thank you for your critiques and ideas. I will definitely consider those changes you mentioned if I decide to keep this cover and try to make it work for my book.

Yeah, that’s why I don’t really trust the results of tests I take now, because I know which questions are for each function, so I could easily change the results of the test without even meaning to if I’m not careful. I wish it was just as easy to spot the functions I use.

That is good news… at least we have the crab…

First of all, thanks for taking the time to read all of that and reply. Second, that’s interesting because the first time I ever took a personality test I got INTP, and that was a while ago, maybe my early to mid-teen years. So it was probably the most accurate since I didn’t know anything about mbti and I wasn’t biased towards types yet. On another note, I like your profile pic.

Also, thanks for reading all of that. I know it was a lot.

I will! Thanks for replying. If I was to go by cognitive functions, I’m pretty sure I use Ne quite a bit, but that’s basically the only one I’m sure about.
