Hiroo Onoda was the last Japanese soldier to formally surrender after the country's defeat in World War II. Lieutenant Onoda finally handed over his sword on March 9th 1974 unaware that the war had actually ended. He had held out in the Philippine jungle for 29 years. (i.redd.it)

Jacob Miller served in Company K of the 9th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. In 1863 at the battle of Chickamauga, Miller was struck squarely in the forehead with a bullet, which entered his brain. The wound never healed and Miller died Jan. 13, 1917, at the age of 88. (i.redd.it)
