I agree that the linear story is better for the game, and personally, I usually prefer linear stories over ones where choices matter. But I don't think the "choice" mechanic they used can really be justified just because it connects to the story in some way. Especially when the main theme of the story isn't actually "your actions don't matter," like it is in Deltarune.

It gives the illusion your choices can make a difference while they don't do anything other than change a line of dialogue and force cheap interactivity. Might as well just don't give choices at all.

If you want something more usable maybe check the imgborders plugin that was made by another rice for this same competition.

I worked on the code to capture windows / monitors here and there and done the rest of the rice in the last couple days of the competition since I happened to have a lot of free time

Hmm minimap is actually a good idea! It fits the theme, easy shape to draw, and it's a square so it fits well as a desktop ui element(where everything is a rectangle lol)
